Obituary of James Lynch

MOHAWK - James “Jim” L. Lynch, age 93, of 31 Michigan St., Mohawk, passed away Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, at Valley Health Services, Herkimer. He was born on May 24, 1915, in Herkimer, the son of James and Bertha (Douglas) Lynch and attended Mohawk schools. Jim was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy in the Philippines. On May 23, 1940, he married Helen McDonald at the Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk. Jim was employed at Remington Arms Co. for 42 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, the Herkimer VFW and was the oldest living member of the Mohawk American Legion Crowley Barnum Post 25 for over 60 years. Survivors include his children, Kathleen Sweet and her husband J. Donald of Herkimer, Patricia Edick and her husband Larry of Newcomb, N.Y., James “Jim” Lynch and his wife Maureen of Newcomb, N.Y., Daniel Lynch and his wife Joy of Raleigh, N.C., Mary Jane Lynch of Freeville, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Larry Edick of Atlanta, Ga., Sheree Maddison and her husband James of Hudson Falls, N.Y., Suzanne Griffis and her husband Philip, Scott Edick of Gansevoort, N.Y., Craig and Brent Lynch of Raleigh, N.C.; four great-grandchildren, Kinsey and Riley Maddison, Ethan and Kurt Griffis; three brothers, Gerald Lynch of Oneida, Doug Lynch of Mohawk and Don Lynch and his wife Helen of Fort Worth, Texas; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen (McDonald) Lynch on March 5, 2007, two sisters, Catherine Miles and Mary Lyman, three brothers, Edward, Francis and Robert Lynch. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk, where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Mark Cunningham, Eucharistic Minister, assisted by Sister Mary Jo Tallman, Parish Life Director. Spring interment will be in Mohawk Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday, March 3, 2009, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Graves-Applegate & Day Funeral Home, 48 E. Main St., Mohawk. Members of the Mohawk American Legion will conduct ritual services at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family wishes to thank the staff at Valley Health Services for the excellent care given to Jim during his recent stay. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to Blessed Sacrament Church, Valley Health Services or your favorite charity.
