Obituary of John Lytwynec

ILION-Mr. John Lytwynec, 84, of Spruce St., passed away peacefully early Thursday morning, March 19, 2009. His passing occurred in the Abraham House, Utica and he had the love and comfort of his family by his side. He was born on July 7, 1924 in Herkimer, son of the late Anthony and Katherine (Holubek) Lytwynec and educated in Herkimer schools. He was a veteran of the military having served proudly with the United States Marine Corps in the South Pacific during World War II. He served with the 5th Amphibious Division. On December 14, 1946 John was united in marriage with Coralie E. Treen in the First Baptist Church, Herkimer; sharing an exemplary relationship of 59 years based upon respect and honor. Mrs. Lytwynec passed away on January 2, 2006. John retired from the former Library Bureau as a cabinet maker where he was a department supervisor. He was a member of the Herkimer Michael S. Pliseck Post #4915, a founding member of the Marine Corps. League, Ilion, and worked for Meals on Wheels for 18 years. He was also instrumental in the beginning stages of the Toys for Tots Program in Ilion and for many years was the local coordinator to pay final respects to fallen Marines. A good and honorable man, John was a wonderful father and grandfather and an inspiring role model. His relationships with his family and his friends were filled with life and spirit of his friendly and witty nature. As a man who loved his family, he established close and loving bonds with each of his family members and will be dearly missed. Survivors include four daughters, Linda O'Hora of Charlotte, NC, Darlene Spicer and her husband Bruce of Granby, CT, Diane Preskitt of New Smyrna Beach, FL/Ilion, and Joncia Lytwynec and her husband Tracy Midgley of Pleasant Valley, CT; a son, John D. Lytwynec and his wife Patti of Liverpool; his siblings: Mary Kowalczyk of Syracuse, Ted Lytwynec of Baltimore, MD, Helen Murphy and husband Bernard of Scotia and Olga Banas and husband John of Camillus; a sister in law: Mella Brown and her husband James of Newport, a brother in law, Robert Treen and his wife Ann of Ilion and a sister in law: Edith Treen of Herkimer; five special grandchildren, Jason Preskitt, Ian Midgley, Renee Spicer, Colin Spicer, and Samuel Lytwynec; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his siblings: Theodore, Daniel, Nicholas, Michael, Joseph and Ann Schad and by his special nephew: David Schad. In respecting Mr. Lytwynec’s wishes there are no calling hours. Relatives and friends will have a private graveside service at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery, E. Herkimer with the Rev. Art Miner of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by the U.S. Marine Corps.
