Obituary of Harold Smith

Mr. Harold Clinton Smith “Smitty” 96 a resident of the Alpine Rehabilitation & Nursing Facility of Little Falls and former resident of 4 Cline Street Dolgeville, died Monday August 17, 2009 in Little Falls Hospital. He was born in Dolgeville, on July 27, 1913 the son of the late William Edward and Harriet (Sterling) Smith and was educated in the Union Free Elementary school and graduated as class president of the Dolgeville High School, class of 1931. His marriage to Aleta Mae Van Allen took place on January 10, 1935 in Dolgeville, with Rev. Moulton pastor of the Universalist Church officiating. Mrs. Smith predeceased him on November 8, 1974. Harold’s working career began with his father in Gloversville at the Smith’s Home Appliances Store, which installed heaters and gas burners. While residing in Gloversville Harold served as chairman of the renovation project of the Presbyterian Church, where he was also a church Elder and a member of the Board of Trustees. During World War II he was employed by the General Electric Company of Schenectady. His abilities and general knowledge led him to the position of Plant Superintendent of building and grounds for the Gloversville School system in 1964. From 1968-70 he served as the plant superintendent of the State prison in Albion, New York. His career then moved him to Building Engineer for the Psychiatric Hospital in Syracuse until he retired from there in 1974. After the death of his wife Aleta in 1974 he relocated back to Dolgeville, where his love of history led him to join the Dolgeville-Manheim Historical Society, the Salisbury, Stratford and Oppenheim Historical Clubs. As a member of the Dolgeville-Manheim club he aided in the restoration of the former Alfred Dolge Hose Company fire house which became the historical society’s museum. He also helped with the restoration of the Frisbee House in Salisbury Center, fashioning tin wall sconces and a chandelier for their museum. His ability to design, craft and electrify sconces and chandeliers, are evident throughout the area as some were placed in historical church belfry’s. Harold was also an avid photographer, developing and printing his own negatives at his home. He is survived by his daughters and their husbands, Nancy Jo and Dr. Roy S. Malpass of El Passo, Texas and Owl’s Head ,New York, Janet Lee Corson of Baltimore, Maryland, and Claudia K. and H. Martin Sutter of Granbury, Texas, his grandchildren Andrea Pannullo, Wendy Culbert, Katherine Anne Haduch and Jay Kenneth Corson, his great grandchildren Thomas Pannullo, Andrew Pannullo, Joseph Pannullo, Christopher Pannullo , Stephen Haduch and Anne Aleta Culbert, and his dear friend Alice R. Matis of Dolgeville. Graveside memorial services will be held Saturday August 29, 2009 at 11 AM in the Middlesprite Cemetery, town of Oppenheim. There are No calling hours.
