Obituary of Emma Smith

ILION - Emma Jane Smith, age 84, formerly of Harrison Ave., Ilion, passed away on Friday May 15, 2009, at Folts Home, Herkimer. She was born on November 1, 1924, in Syracuse, NY, the daughter of Walter J. and Harriett (Wheeler) Bennett and graduated from Nottingham High School. On July 20, 1944, she was married to Russell James Smith in Alexandria, Louisiana. He passed way on August 17, 1976. At one time Emma Jane was employed at Doctors Applegate, Weeden & Boyers Office. She later was employed at Remington Arms Co., Ilion. Mrs. Smith was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ilion, and was an active member of the Mohawk American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Emma Jane enjoyed scrabble, puzzles and loved to swim. Her life centered around her family. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas R. and Della A. Smith of Ilion, Lynn E. and Cynthia Smith of New Hartford; her grandchildren, Thomas M. Smith and his wife, Lisa of Voorheesville, NY, Jennifer J. Watkins and husband, Damian of Ilion, Paula A. Born and her husband, Dennis of Ilion, Christopher Smith and his wife, Heather of Texas, Jamie True and her husband, Paul of Ilion, and Erica Smith of New Hartford; ten great-grandchildren, Ashley Smith, Keely Tutty, Sophia Watkins, Olivia Watkins, Dennis Born, Tyler and Jacob Testa, Paul True, III, Madicyn and Ryan Smith; her brother-in-law, Richard Sussman of Holland Patent, NY; several nieces, nephews and many special friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Russell and sister, Marie McMahon. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion, with Rev. Victor McKusick, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will be in Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion. Calling hours are Monday, May 18, 2009, from 5-7 p.m. A special thanks from the family to the 4th floor staff at the Folts Home for their excellent care.
