Obituary of Robert Turner

HERKIMER - Mr. Robert J. “Turbo” Turner, 46, of Jeffrey Street, Herkimer entered into eternal rest unexpectedly of natural causes on Wednesday afternoon, May 13, 2009 in Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare, New Hartford. He was born on October 16, 1962 in Herkimer, son of the late Keith F. Turner and Rita (Keddell) Turner of Herkimer. He was a lifelong Herkimer resident. Robert was a senior consultant with Benefit Plans Administrators in Utica. He was a communicant of St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer. Turbo was loved and respected by all who knew him and treasured the times he spent with everyone especially his devoted family members. Bob belonged to the Herkimer Junior Elks League since 1975 from the age of 13. In 1976, he volunteered to be the league secretary, and had been doing the scores ever since. He became a coach in the 1981-82 season. When league founder Chuck Sullivan Jr. retired from the program after the 1990 season, Turbo took over as the leader of the program. Among the accomplishments that Turbo was most proud of were the 13 New York State Titles, 8 New York State Elks, and 4 New York State YABA titles. He was especially proud of the numerous Jr. Bowlers who went on to make their High School All League Teams. Bob is perhaps most well known as the "Voice of the Herkimer Magicians" announcing Herkimer Varsity Football games since 1981, and Boys and Girls Basketball since 1982 and which allowed him to fulfill a lifelong dream of being a sports announcer. Survivors include his beloved family; his mother: Rita Turner of Herkimer; nieces and nephews: Eric Judson, Christian Judson, Erin Judson, Kelly Ladd, and Megan Ladd; great nieces, nephews: Graeme Wood, Ryan Judson, Jack Judson, Delaney Judson, Nate Fox, Madison Conigliaro and Arya Mullin; aunts and uncles: Robert and Ruth Keddell of Naples, Florida, J. Catherine Hadcock of Herkimer and Joseph and Betty Keddell of Oneonta; also surviving are many cousins and family friends. Besides his father, he was preceded in death by his two beloved sisters: Kay Turner-Ladd and Sue Ellyn Turner-Barker. The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in the Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St., Herkimer on Friday, May 15, 2009 from 4-7 p.m. Robert’s funeral will commence at 9:15 am on Saturday, May 16 from the chapel of the funeral home where prayer will be offered and at 10 am from St. Francis de Sales Church, Bellinger St., Herkimer where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Mark Cunningham, pastor. Funeral procession will follow to Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer where he will be laid to rest in the family plot.
