Obituary of Carmen Altamuro

HERKIMER-Carmen A. "Hobo" Altamuro, of Perry St., Herkimer, passed away on Friday evening, May 2, 2008 in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown following a brief illness. He was born in Herkimer on Feb. 22, 1941, son of the late Frank and Rocca (Buttiglone) Altamuro and educated in Herkimer schools. An honorably discharged United States Air Force Veteran, he served from 1958-1959. He lived for 15 years in Baltimore, MD before returning to the Herkimer area. While residing in Baltimore he worked for the Toyota car dealership. The best times of Carm?s life were spent in Maryland where he took up the hobby of surf casting and simply enjoyed spending time at the beach. He was a communicant of Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church, Herkimer. Carmen loved spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of the Polish Community Home, Herkimer VFW Post #4915, Herkimer American Legion Post #38 and the Italian American War Veterans. He leaves his children: Dominic, Michele and Veronica all of Utica; his siblings: Laura Myers of Herkimer, Bella Altamuro of Herkimer, Frances Kirby of Lawrenceville, GA, Mary Jane Moschelle and husband John of Cumberland Head, Plattsburgh, James "Jim" Altamuro and wife Louise of Utica and Victor Altamuro and wife Maria of Queens. Also surviving is Carm?s special friend Mary; grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister: Mike, Frank, Angelo Altamuro and Carmella Altamuro. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St., Herkimer on Monday, May 5, 2008 from 5-7 p.m. Carm?s funeral will commence at 9:15 am on Tuesday, May 6th from the chapel of the funeral home where a prayer service will take place and 10 am from Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church, S. Main St., Herkimer where the Rev. Anthony Ligato will celebrate his Mass of Christian Burial. Procession will follow to Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer where he will be laid to rest. The United States Air Force will offer military honors. In lieu of floral tributes, kindly consider memorial offerings to the American Cancer Society; envelopes will be available at the funeral home for this purpose. The Altamuro family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Bassett Healthcare along with Bassett Transport (especially Mr. Pritchard) and MOVAC for the special concern and compassion with which they offered Carm. Also, thanks to his family and friends for the companionship and friendship they offered over the years. The following organizations will conduct services on Monday evening: Herkimer American Legion Post #38 at 6 p.m. and the Herkimer VFW #4915 at 6:30 p.m.
