Obituary of Jack Carter

ILION ? Jack H. Carter, 83, of 14 Cross St., Ilion, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2008, at home with his family by his side. He was born on Sept. 27, 1924, in Ilion, the son of Robert and Lywena (Hughes) Carter. Jack graduated from Ilion High School and Utica College of Syracuse University. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army, and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. Jack was awarded the Bronze Star with a V device for valor. His unit was at the liberation of the Mauthausen Concentration Camp in Austria. On May 5, 1951, he was married to Jane C. Collins in Frankfort. Mr. Carter was employed as superintendent in the planning department at Remington Arms Co., Ilion, retiring in 1981 after 30 years of employment. He was a member of the Church of the Annunciation and at one time its Nocturnal Adoration Society. Jack was a member of the Ilion Board of Light Commissioners, Board of Directors of American Red Cross and organized many local blood drives. He was also active in the Council of Churches and the Boy Scouts. Survivors include his wife, Jane, two daughters; Nancy C. Manion and husband Robert of Ilion, and Mary C. Toot and Husband Walter of Rochester; three sons; John P. Carter and wife Susan of St. Clair, Michigan, Timothy G. Carter and wife Kathleen of Kennebuck, Maine, and Matthew J. Carter and wife Masako of Essex Junction, Vermont; 13 grandchildren; Kathleen Bugeya and husband Josh, M. Thomas Manion, Christopher Toot and wife Amanda, Daniel Toot, Shannon Toot, Maureen Boullard and husband Mike, Meredith Carter, Ellen Carter, Laura Shore, Kevin Keeley, Alexandra Carter, Evanne Carter, and Lisa Carter; 3 great grandchildren, Alex Dihrberg, Carter and Colin Boullard; his brother Robert Carter of Ilion, Several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother Glenn. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion and at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Annunciation where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Anthony Barratt, Pastor. Calling hours are Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the Ilion Ambulance Fund or Hospice.
