Obituary of Ruth Hok

Ruth Carter Hok of 298 Shoemaker Road, Mohawk, NY departed this life on February 14, 2008. Ruth was born in Dormont, Pittsburgh, PA. on November 18, 1916, the daughter of Asa Leroy Carter and Euphemia (Stevenson) Carter. As an honor student at Morgantown High School and while attending West Virginia University, Ruth received a Fulbright Equivalent Scholarship and studied at Sorbonne in Pairs, France. Owing to the outbreak of war, she returned to the United States and continued her education Barnard College and Columbia University, NY, receiving her MA (1942) and PHD (1947) degrees the latter in French linguistics. In 1942 Ruth married Gunnar Hok at the ?Little Church around the Corner?, NYC. Their careers then took them to Harvard and then to the University of Michigan where Gunnar as an electrical engineer taught and did research connected with the war effort; this while Ruth was teaching English to non English-speaking students. In this field, Ruth became a recognized authority. Also she authored ?Eduard Estaunie the Perplexed Positivist?. In 1978 Gunnar retired and they made their home in his native land in Stockholm, Sweden. They then sojourned for two years in Cairo, Egypt where Ruth resumed her teaching at the American University of Cairo. Ruth?s beloved husband, Gunnar, died in 1986. Ruth?s grief subsiding she resumed her teaching at the Chinese University of Hong Kong; and later, until the Ayatollah returned to Iran Ruth taught at the University of Isafahan, Iran. Ruth is remembered by her niece Leah R. Carter of Mohawk, and by her relatives and her many friends both here and abroad for her never failing optimism and for her love of traveling, which took her during her later years to Russia and Africa. Ruth is survived by her niece, Leah Ruth Carter also of Mohawk and her grand niece Jessica Marie Carter of Phoenix, Arizona. Her brother and his wife Paul N. Carter and Taimi E. Carter and her nephews John E.S. Carter and Scott Leroy Carter predeceased Ruth. Ruth will be interred beside her beloved husband Gunnar in services by arrangements participated in by his family in Sweden with her many friends there being in attendance. Ruth?s family thanks the Masonic Community Care?s doctors its nurses, aides and its Staff for the many kindnesses and care of Ruth during the late days of her life.
