Obituary of Elizabeth McCumber

FRANKFORT-ILION - Elizabeth “Betty” J. McCumber, 85, formerly of Frankfort and Ilion, died Thursday, July 10, 2008, at Northeast Methodist Hospital, San Antonio, Texas. She was born Nov. 5, 1922, in Marcy, N.Y., the daughter of George M. and M. Elizabeth (Doty) Watson. Betty was a graduate of Whitesboro Central School and attended Cortland State Teachers College and MVCC. At one time, she was married to George Basher. She later married Rev. Robert B. McCumber on Nov. 22, 1970, in Westernville, N.Y. He died on July 11, 2008. Elizabeth was employed as a switchboard operator for Rome Cable Corp., Rome, N.Y., and most recently employed as a “specialist” at Herkimer County Office for the Aging. Mrs. McCumber was Mohawk District officer for United Methodist Women and North Central Conference officer, former Sunday School teacher, and served on the Board of Directors of the Neighborhood Center of Utica. Survivors include: one daughter and son-in-law, C. Jill and Major Mark Yager Ret. of Texas; one son and daughter-in-law, G. Christopher and Sandra Basher of Delaware; two step-daughters, Edna Werthman of Texas, Janice Brrows and husband Elwood of Missouri; two step sons, Melvin McCumber and wife Patricia of Stony Brook, NY, and Robert McCumber and wife, Linda of Frankfort; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth Frank of Wilmington, N.C., Dorothy Mudge and Clara Ellis of Rome, N.Y.; one brother; Charles Watson of McConnellsville, N.Y.; one sister-in-law, Josephine Watson of Florida; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by two brothers, George William Watson and James Watson; a step-daughter, Patricia Everson; and step-son, Thomas McCumber. Friends and relatives are invited to attend her Memorial Service at a later date at a time and location to be announced. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the Neighborhood Center of Utica. Envelopes are available at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion.
