Obituary of Helen Merena

HERKIMER-Mrs. Helen D. (Devera) Merena, 92, formerly of Moore Ave., and a current resident of Folts Homes, Herkimer, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday evening, April 2, 2008 at the nursing home. She was born on July 6, 1915 in Herkimer, daughter of the late Michael and Marie (Wrobel) Devera and educated in Herkimer schools and graduated from Herkimer High School. On November 24, 1942, Helen began a wonderful marriage of 65 years when she married Peter Merena at Christ Episcopal Church in Herkimer. She was last employed with Duofold, Mohawk. She was a faithful member of the Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer. Helen took wonderful care of her family throughout her 92 years of life. She will be missed and forever remembered as a loving, caring and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Survivors include her husband Peter of Folts Homes, Herkimer; three daughters: Karran Swayze of Youngtown, Maryann Dolence and husband Michael of Claremont, and Sylvia Malone and husband Tom of Ilion; a sister: Lucia "Babe" Devera of Herkimer; a daughter in law: Janice Merena of Herkimer; two sisters in law: Helen Clark of Arkport and Katherine Merena of Little Falls; nine cherished grandchildren: Kyle Merena, Kelly Merena, Stephanie and Tim Wiegand, Katie Ann Dolence, Michael Dolence, Heather, Lauren and Rachel Malone; an adored great grandaughter: Allison and Grace Wiegand; nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is reunited in heaven with her beloved son, Peter Merena who passed away on May 17, 2007; her brother: Michael Devera; her sister: Mary Devera and with her son in law: Brian Swayze who passed away in 1995. Loved ones and friends are invited to visitation at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St., Herkimer on Saturday, April 5, 2008 from 10:30 am-12:30 pm. A prayer service will be offered at the funeral home at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday followed by a 1:00 pm funeral service at Christ Episcopal Church, N. Main St., Herkimer with the Rev. Paul Bailey, Rector, officiating. She will be laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery, Herkimer. In lieu of floral tributes, kindly consider memorial offerings to the Peter Merena Scholarship Fund, envelopes may be obtained at the funeral parlor. The family wishes to thank the 4th floor of Folts Homes, especially RN Charmine Kissner for the care and compassion offered.
