Obituary of Francis Monroe

RICHFIELD SPRINGS/ILION-Mr. Francis G. Monroe, 92, of West Main Street, Ilion, a former longtime resident of Bronner Street, Richfield Springs, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 20, 2008 in Little Falls Hospital with his son and daughter in law by his side. He was born on June 7, 1916 in Chaseville, son of the late George and Nellie (Curry) Monroe and educated in Richfield Springs schools. After school, Francis joined the Civilian Conservation Corps., and then on February 11, 1942 enlisted with the United States Army. A proud World War II U.S veteran, he served during the Battle of the Bulge and also the Central Europe, Normandy, and Rhineland campaigns. He was the recipient of the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Purple Heart for heroic service to his country. On September 28, 1945, he was honorably discharged at the Fort Dix Separation Center holding the rank of Technician Fourth Grade with the 748th Truck Battalion. Mr. Monroe was last employed by the village of Richfield Springs as a snow plow operator. He leaves his son: Wayne Monroe and wife Debbie of Ilion and a daughter: Bonnie Polivka of Florida; his grandchildren: Chad and Todd Monroe, Michelle Monroe, Toni Montana, Tyler and Katie Polivka; two great grandchildren: Todd Monroe, Jr., and Shelby Monroe. He was predeceased by eleven siblings. There are no public calling hours or funeral service. Burial will take place in the spring of 2009 in Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion where military honors will be accorded by the US Army.
