Obituary of Katherine Nelson

ILION-Mrs. Katherine B. (Burnett) Nelson, 95, of East St., Ilion, entered into eternal rest early Tuesday morning, September 23, 2008 in Valley Health Services surrounded by those she loved dearly. She was born on May 10, 1913 in McKeever, NY the daughter of the late John and Katherine (LaRock) Burnett and educated in Boonville schools. She furthered her education attending the Utica School of Beauty. On July 31, 1929 she was united in marriage with Victor Nelson in St. Joseph's Church, Boonville. He passed away on January 8, 1979. For over thirty years, Katherine owned and operated Nelson's Beauty Shop on East Street in Ilion. She was of the Catholic faith and a devoted communicant of Annunciation Church, Ilion and also a member of the Humane Society. Katherine was a family woman, deeply dedicated to her loved ones. She was always a constant and caring presence, a significant influence and a pillar of support in the lives of her children, her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Katherine dedicated herself wholeheartedly and lovingly to her family and friends. In her leisure time, she enjoyed keeping her hands busy by knitting, sewing, crocheting and crossword puzzles. Animals were a big part of her life always treating them with love and respect. Survivors include her family: two daughters: Edna Nelson of Ilion and Jean O'Brien and husband John of Clinton; a sister: Mary Pierce of Mohawk; her cherished grandchildren: Linda Rood and husband Gene of Mohawk, Richard Darling of Arizona, Wayne Darling and wife Pat of Ilion, Robin Shoen of Herkimer, Susan Moynihan (David Nashton) of Herkimer, Brian King and wife Roseane of Cooperstown, David King and wife Teresa of New Hartford, Erin O'Brien, Michael O'Brien and wife Kyong Ae of Ft. Wayne; her adored great grandchildren: Kelly, Becky, Jeffrey, Brett, Craig, Nicole, Jennifer, Michael, Keith, Kari, Kim, Allen, Katie, Briana, Carley, Kayla, Allison, Ana, Suzanne, Jeffrey, Barbara, David, Michael and Matthew; two adored great great grandchildren: Krystina Higgitt and Tyler Rood; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by two daughters: Lauana Darling and Martha Bly; by her siblings; by her granddaughter: Lisa Marie Darling and by two grandsons: Terence O'Brien and Sgt. Keith Darling. The family offers its heartfelt gratitude to the personnel of Hospice Care, Inc; especially to Georgia, Judy, Bonnie and Ed. Also thank you to the caring and professional staff on 1st floor extension for their kindness and compassion. It would be remiss to not acknowledge Katherine's own daughter, Edna, who remained a pillar of support to her mother during the tough times. Relatives and friends may pay their respects at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., between Ilion and Frankfort, 894-8000 on Wednesday, September 24, 2008 (today) from 5-8 p.m. Mrs. Nelson's funeral will commence at 9:00 am on Thurs., Sept. 25, from the chapel of the Enea Family Funeral Home where prayer will be offered and at 9:45 from Annunciation Church, West St., Ilion where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Anthony Barratt, pastor. Procession will follow to Mohawk Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest.
