Obituary of Elizabeth O'Connell

DOLGEVILLE/MOHAWK-Mrs. Elizabeth C. "Bettie" O'Connell, 83, of Catherine St., Mohawk, a Dolgeville native, entered into eternal rest on Friday, October 3, 2008 peacefully in Valley Health Services, Herkimer. At the time of her passing she was surrounded with the love and support of her family. She was born in Dolgeville on September 22, 1925, daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Nash) Currie and graduated from Dolgeville High School. She was joined in marriage with John "Jack" O'Connell on February 8, 1947 in St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer. Mr. O'Connell passed away in 1996. Bettie was last employed by Mohawk Central School as a teacher's assistant and reading specialist, retiring in 1984. She was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk. Bettie was also a very active member of the Mohawk retired teachers association. Bettie's primary focus in life was her family. She was extremely proud of each and every one of them and their achievements. She remained active in the fact that she was always willing to lend a hand to any family member of friend that needed it. One of her favorite hobbies was reading. Her legacy will be carried on proudly by her loved ones. Survivors include her beloved family: her children: Catherine Metzler and companion Walt Baker of Dover Plains, Erin Jones and husband Tom of West Winfield, Nancy Vivlamore and husband Tom of Ilion, John O'Connell and wife Irma of Widefield, CO, Margaret "Peggy" Olson and companion Kevin Wren of Mohawk; her grandchildren: Kurt Metzler and wife Katrina, SFC Tom Metzler and wife Angelica, Ryan Jones and wife Sheila, Bret Jones and companion Laci Paluck, Mark Jones and wife Beth, Jennifer Williams and husband Scott, David Vivlamore and wife Jackie, Specialist Patrick O'Connell, Sandy O'Connell and companion Lucas Cortez, Katharine Olson and and fiancé Phillip Gogol, Gretchen Olson and Rachel Olson; great grandchildren: Christopher Metzler, Billy and Savana Metzler, Reilly, Reganne and Erin Jones, Connell and Gavin Williams, Zachary Harrington, Anastacia and Ariel Cortez; and a sister in law: Eleanor Currie of Mohawk. Also surviving are many cousins and numerous friends including Peggy Leonard. She also leaves her husband's cousins: Rita Turner and Catherine Hadcock. Bettie was predeceased by four brothers: Jack, Jim, Paul and Alan Currie. A heartfelt thank you is offered to the staff Valley Health Services and Little Falls Hospital, especially mentioning the 3 East Staff for their kindness and compassion. Also, a special thanks to all the many friends and family who have supported mom and her family during her illness. The family will be present at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., between Ilion and Frankfort to receive relatives and friends on Monday, October 6, 2008 from 5-8 p.m. The funeral service in celebration of Bettie's life will commence at 10:15 am on Tuesday, Oct. 7, from the funeral home where prayer will be offered followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am from Blessed Sacrament Church, E. Main St., Mohawk where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Mark Cunningham, Sacramental Minister assisted by Sister Mary Jo Tallman, Parish Life Director. Funeral procession will follow to Mohawk Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest with her husband John "Jack".
