Obituary of Helen Padgham

ILION - Helen M. Padgham, 105, of Forge Hill Estates, Ilion, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008, at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare, New Hartford. She was born on Sept. 21, 1902, in Ilion, the daughter of Frank J. and Julia (Quinilty) McCarthy. Helen was a graduate of Herkimer High School Class of 1920, Oneonta Normal School and SUNY at Oneonta. On June 27, 1942, she was married to Thomas A. Padgham at St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer. He died on April 22, 1962. Helen was a school teacher at Tuger School, Herkimer, for 43 years, retiring in 1969. She was a member of the Church of the Annunciation, Herkimer American Legion Auxiliary Unit 38 and AARP. Mrs. Padgham was a former member of the Mohawk Homestead Board of Directors, Herkimer Garden Club, Herkimer County Retired Teachers, Herkimer County Historical Society and Herkimer County Humane Society. Survivors include her nephew, Albert F. Lawrence and his wife Patricia of Herkimer; two grandnieces, Jessica Saliba and husband Michael of New York City, Jennifer Lawrence of New Haven, Conn.; great-grandniece, Olivia Grace Saliba; great-grandnephew, Michael Lawrence Saliba; several cousins including, Jim Kirkpatrick of New Hartford, Joan Kirkpatrick of Herkimer and Ann Green of Florida. She was predeceased by three sisters, Sister Margaret McCarthy, RSM, Irene E. McCarthy and Gertrude Lawrence. Funeral services will be held at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion, and 11 a.m. at the Church of the Annunciation, Ilion, where a funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Anthony Barratt, pastor. Spring interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer. Visitation will be on Thursday from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers and as an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Annunciation Memorial Fund or the Herkimer County Humane Society.
