Obituary of Christine Pecoroni

BRIDGEPORT, CT.-Christine Margetiak Pecoroni, 91, died on July 1st 2008 at Bridgeport Hospital / Hospice in Bridgeport, Connecticut. She was the mother of Richard W. Pecoroni of Stratford, Connecticut and the Aunt of John Mizerak and Anne Mizerak Paraka of Little Falls, New York. Born Christina Margetiak on August 6th 1916 in Myjava, Slovakia to the late Betty Sadak Osley and Paul Margetiak. She is half sister to the late Betty Osley Mizerak and Anna Osley. She is full sister to the late Sue Margetiak Hydusek and Kati Margetiak Klasovita and step sister to the late Katherin Margetiak Maniacek. Christina grew up on a farm in Slovakia, Europe. In the spring of 1937, at age 21, Christina traveled from her hometown in Slovakia to America and lived with her Aunt in North Tarrytown, New York. Determined to make her life in America successful, she worked at various maid positions until obtaining a position as governess to Richard Trump in New York City. She met Valentine (Wally) Pecoroni on the boardwalk of Coney Island during the summer of 1941 and was married to him in December of that year. They subsequently moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut. In December 1948, she gave birth to her only child Richard William. She and her husband later divorced in 1960. Christina was the epitome of a loving, supportive, loyal, and dependable mother. Christina maintained a strong work ethic throughout her life. During WWII she worked at Columbia Records as the final master cut inspector. After the war, she and her husband moved to Rumford, Rhode Island, where they started a television sales, installation, and repair business. In 1952, after growing the business to 300 employees servicing three states, they sold the business and moved back to Bridgeport. She then worked at various jobs in and around Bridgeport. Her last job was with the University of Bridgeport for the final ten years of her career, retiring at age 72 in 1989. From humble beginnings as a farmer's daughter to a strong independent woman, she was respected by many. After retiring, she traveled back to her family roots in Slovakia for the first time since she left, some 52 years later. She was admired as the strong matriarchal center of her extended family both here in America and in Europe. She was the person everyone went to for advice, being respected for her directness and no-nonsense approach to solving problems. Christine is survived by her son, Richard W. Pecoroni and his wife Ellen and one grandson, Mathew Pecoroni of Stratford Connecticut; a niece, Anna Paraka, and a nephew, John Mizerak, of Little Falls, New York.
