Gary E. Swartz, 63, a long time St. Johnsville resident, passed away on Tuesday March 18, 2008 at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, NY with his loving family by his side. He was born January 8, 1945, in Little Falls, the son of the late Edward & Marion (Allen) Swartz. Gary was a graduate of St. Johnsville High School, class of 1963 and furthered his education by attending Mohawk Valley Community College. His marriage to Jean Kanuch took place on May 21, 1966 at St. Patrick?s Church in St. Johnsville. Gary served for eight years in the United States Army Reserves. Mr. Swartz was last employed at Prudent Engineering, LLC in Syracuse, NY. Prior to that he worked for the NY State DOT for over 22 years. Gary was Past Fire Chief from 1974 to 1989 for the St. Johnsville Volunteer Fire Department and a member of St. Patrick?s Church. He also belonged to the St. Johnsville American Legion, and was crew chief for the Flyin? Ryan Racing Team #24. A man devoted to his family Gary proved himself a loving and caring husband father and grandfather, who always tended to their needs. Survivors include his loving wife of 42 years, Jean, a son Jeffrey Swartz and wife Renee of St. Johnsville, a daughter, Connie Ketola and husband Todd of Brighton, Michigan, four grandchildren, Ryan, Alyssa and Kirsten Swartz and Nolan Ketola, a brother-in-law, James Kanuch of Canajoharie, and several nephews, aunts, uncles & cousins. He was pre-deceased by a sister-in-law, Kathleen Kanuch. Funeral services will be held on Friday March 21, 2008 at 11:00 am from the Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville, NY. Spring Burial will be in West St. Johnsville Cemetery. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Thursday March 20, 2008 from 5-8 pm. In lieu of flowers please make all memorial contributions to the St. Johnsville Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
