Obituary of Louise Waufle

ILION/EAST HERKIMER ? Louise (Rivers) Waufle, age 96, formerly of London Towers, Ilion, died Friday, February 8, 2008, at the Eastern Star Home Campus, Oriskany, where she resided since September of 2003. She was born on February 3, 1912, in Ilion, the daughter of Eugene and Floddie (Nichols) Rivers. Louise graduated from Ilion High School in 1929 and Excelsior School of Business in 1931. One of her first jobs was with Herkimer County Social Services in accounts payable. Later, she worked for Remington Rand Co., also known as UNIVAC. She retired in 1974 after 35 years. After retirement, she remained active. Louise was recognized for 10 years of service to Herkimer County Meals on Wheels and was involved in organizing and planning a weekly Christian program for residents of Valley Health Services. She attended and was active in the New Life Church in Herkimer. As a devoted mother, wife, grandmother, friend, neighbor and parishioner, she will be dearly missed. Louise will be remembered as an ?Unsung Hero,? helping and giving herself tirelessly. She was a kind woman. Her love of Christ and her faith in Him was her ministry. Louise married James R. Van Alstyne in November of 1943. He predeceased her in November of 1953. Her second marriage was to Gordon Waufle of Ilion. They married in May of 1963. Gordon died in 1979. While married to Jim and then Gordon, she resided in East Herkimer. She was of benefit to both marriages, fulfilling family responsibilities while working. After the death of Gordon, she was a longtime resident of the Ilion Housing Authority?s London Towers, 100 W. Main St., Ilion. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jean (Van Alstyne) and Robert ?Mike? Wagner of Marcy; her grandson, who she cared for dearly, James Wagner and wife, Rebecca, of Clay; two step-daughters, Leola (Waufle) Streeter and her husband, George, of Ilion and Donna (Waufle) Timpke of New York City; and four step-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; two husbands; her sister, Margaret Bills; and her niece, Allison Hoffman. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, February 12, 2008, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion, with Pastor Joe Jansen officiating. Burial will be in Armory Hill Cemetery in Ilion. Calling hours are Tuesday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Anyone needing a ride to the calling hours or service may call the funeral home at 895-7722 for complimentary transportation assistance. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to New Life Church of Herkimer or the American Cancer Society.
