Obituary of Mary Anyango

Mary "Kim" (Hurteau) Anyango, age 55, of 165 Otsego St., Ilion, passed away Saturday, March 31, 2007, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on October 2, 1951 in Ogdensburg, NY, the daughter of Douglas and Doris (Monnet) Hurteau. Kim graduated from St. Mary's Academy, Ogdensburg, in 1969 and D'Youville College, Buffalo, in 1973, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. Upon graduation, she worked at the Veterans Hospital, Buffalo, from 1973-1975. She then joined the Peace Corps and worked as a Nurse Instructor in Kenya, E. Africa, where she met and married her husband, Paul Anyango on February 18, 1978. Kim later worked at Nairobi Hospital Intensive Care Unit in Kenya until July 1981. She also worked at Hepburn Hospital, Ogdensburg, St. Luke's Memorial Hospital, New Hartford, and Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown. Most recently, Kim was employed as a Supervising Nurse at Herkimer County Public Health for the past 12 years. She was a member of the Church of the Annunciation, Ilion, and was a Religious Education Teacher. Survivors include her husband, Paul; her beloved children, Charles Anyango and his wife, Jennifer of Ilion, Mallory Anyango of New Hartford, Justin and Isaac Anyango of Ilion; cherished grandchildren, Orion and Camron; her parents, Douglas and Doris Hurteau of Ogdensburg; two sisters, Marta Fitzpatrick and husband, Bert of NC, Mallory Hurteau and husband, Jeff Mauri; four brothers, Doug Hurteau of Ogdensburg, Marc Hurteau and wife, Kathy of Ohio, Matt Hurteau and wife, Jan of NC, Andrew Hurteau and wife, Lana of California; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Truphosa and Chris Gekonge of Utica; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her grandparents, Francis and Ann Hurteau and Auguste and Mary Monnet; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and Elseba Anyango; and sisters-in-law, Grace Omanga and Rispa Anyango. A memorial prayer service will be held 7 p.m., Monday, April 2, 2007, at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion, with Father Anthony Barratt, Pastor of the Church of the Annunciation, officiating. Calling hours are Monday, 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at St. Mary's Cathedral, Ogdensburg. Anyone needing a ride to the calling hours or memorial service may call the funeral home at 895-7722 for complimentary transportation assistance. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Mary Kimberly Anyango Memorial Scholarship Fund (for the benefit of the Sinaga Village Orphanage in Kenya).
