Obituary of Alvin Bluett

ILION-Alvin H. Bluett, age 78, of 9 W. Montgomery St., Ilion, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 11, 2007, at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare, New Hartford, NY. He was born on September 15, 1929, in Herkimer, the son of LeRoy E. and Olive (Waterman) Bluett, and was a graduate of Ilion High School and attended Mohawk Valley Tech., Utica. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U.S. Army. On May 10, 1952, he was married to Barbara Allen at the First Baptist Church of Ilion. Mr. Bluett was employed at Griffiss AFB, Rome, as a draftsman, from June 1954 to September 1986. He was a member, past Trustee and past Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Ilion, and was a member of the Ilion Masonic Lodge and Mohawk Valley Square Dancers. At one time, Alvin was very active in Boys Scouts and was known by local children as "The Bicycle Man". He held his family very near and dear to him and his greatest enjoyment was to have them all home together. During the past 20 years, he enjoyed his winter trips to Florida. Survivors include his wife, Barbara; four children, Lynn Bluett and his wife, Denise, of Rochester, Kevin Bluett and his wife, Leslie, of Ilion, David Bluett and his wife, Maureen, of Lockport, and Catherine Slowik and her husband, Edward, of Ilion; seven grandchildren, Kevin Jay Bluett, II, and his wife, Cathy, Heather Goerlich and her husband, Steven, Gretchen Spencer and her husband, Patrick, Christopher Bluett and his fiancee, Erin Fasolilli, Jennifer Bluett, Andrew Slowik and Sara Slowik; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; one brother, Danford Bluett; and three sisters, Frances Sullivan, Peggy Kingsley and Eleanor Wilks. Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, December 14, 2007, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion, with Rev. Dr. Andrew D. Peloubet, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Ilion, officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, 4:00-7:00 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home. Anyone needing a ride to visitation and/or services may call the funeral home at 895-7722 for complimentary transportation assistance. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to Ilion Ambulance Corps or Herkimer County Humane Society.
