Obituary of Samuel Cockett

Samuel J. Cockett, 80, of Plant City, FL, formerly of Mohawk, passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2007, at South Florida Baptist Hospital, Plant City, FL. He was born on August 5, 1926 in Utica, the son of Samuel L. and Marguerite (McMaster) Cockett and graduated from Mohawk High School in 1944. Sam was a WWII veteran serving in the U.S. Army Air Corp. stationed on the Island of Attu in the Aleutions off the coast of Alaska. He was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of Sergeant. He was united in marriage to Rose Mary Onorato on June 26, 1948 at St. Mary's Church, Frankfort, with Rev. Michael Fufferd officiating. Their marriage lasted for 51 years until her passing on Oct. 28, 1999. Sam retired in 1981 as a Production Control Manager for UNIVAC in Utica, Ilion, and later in Santa Clara, CA. He had over 30 years of service during which time he traveled extensively overseas and throughout the United States. He later worked for Savin Corp. and Mohawk Data Sciences. At one time he played semi-pro football with the Frankfort Vets and wore #44 jersey. Sam was a past Chief of the Mohawk Fire Dept., past Commander of Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post #25, and past County Commander. He was a member of the Mohawk Fish & Game, Mohawk Exempt Fireman's Assoc. and Northern New York Drill Team Captain's Assoc. He enjoyed bowling, hunting and volunteering his time at the Tourist Information Booth in Plant City, FL. Survivors include his sons, Jon Cockett and partner, Judy Logan of West Winfield, William Cockett of Rome, NY; his daughter, Susan Harrod and partner, Dale Edwards of Mohawk; his granddaughters, Christine Ricci and husband, Brian of Schuyler, Deborah Roberts and her husband, Edward of Merritt Island, FL; grandson, Brian Harrod and wife, Kim of Herkimer; his great-grandchildren, Steven Shaver of Schuyler, Shana and Reese Harrod of Herkimer, Michael and Keira Ricci of Schuyler, Edward Roberts of Merritt Island, FL; his sister-in-law, Grace De Rocco of Ilion; and brother-in-law, Donald Sawyer Sr. of Mohawk; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Shirley Roberts and Barbara Sawyer. In keeping with Sam's wishes, there will be a memorial service at the Graves-Applegate-Day Funeral Home, 48 E. Main St., Mohawk, at a time and date to be announced later this spring. All services were prearranged by Sam and entrusted to Graves-Applegate-Day Funeral Home of Mohawk.
