Obituary of James Dunn

James C. (Jim) Dunn, 81, a life long Herkimer resident, passed away on Saturday December 1, 2007 at his home. He was born June 20, 1926 in Herkimer the son of the late Clifford & Mabel Dunn. Jim attended local schools, and was a proud member of Coach Morgan?s championship Herkimer High School teams, and also played semi ? professional football. He was an Army veteran of World War II in Korea and the Philippines in the Red Star Division (1st infantry, 6th Division). He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant. Upon return from the service he went to work at Remington Arms and retired in 1988 after 37 years with Utica Corp. (formerly Kelsey ? Hayes) as a tool maker. On November 19, 1955 Jim married Loretta Halpin, a beautiful union of 52 years. Jim was a 50 year member of the Knights of Columbus #539. For many years, a member of the Mohawk Valley Chapter of NYS Certified Football Officials, and a member of the Mohawk Valley Coachman Trailer Club. Since retiring he had been a member of the early morning HCCC Circuit Club and so enjoyed his early morning friends. For the past 14 years, Jim & Loretta have wintered in Florida at Goodlife RV Resort in Bartow, Florida, where they met many new, wonderful Friends. Jim was a parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Church. Besides his wife, Loretta, Jim is survived by a son, James F. Dunn of Troy, NY, a daughter, Susan Pontius and husband Kevin of Mattawan, Michigan, and three cherished granddaughters, Elly, Cassie, and Carly Pontius. He is also survived by a sister Mable Gokey of Bristol, Tenn., and two brothers, Bernard Dunn and wife Mary of Herkimer, and Donald Dunn and wife Jerrie of Mohawk. Jim was very proud of his nieces & nephews, Robert Gokey, Janet Dunn, Mary Lydia Salisbury, Bill Dunn, Tom Dunn, Paul Bailey, Eric Todd, Tommy Dunn, Sean Dunn, and Jay Todd. He was pre-deceased by a nephew, Danny Dunn. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday December 4, 2007 at 10:15 am from the Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St., Herkimer, NY and at 11:00 am from St. Francis de Sales Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Reverend Mark Cunningham, pastor. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery (weather permitting). Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home Monday December 3, 2007 (today) from 3-7 pm. Members of the Herkimer Knights of Columbus # 539 are asked to meet at the funeral home Monday evening at 5:00 pm for services. All memorial contributions may be made to Bassett Cancer Unit in Herkimer or to Hospice and Palliative Care. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses at Bassett Cancer Unit in Herkimer and Hospice and Palliative Care for the great care they gave Jim in his 6 ? month battle with lung cancer.
