Dolgeville- Oppenheim Mr. Willard J. ?Bill? Elwood 86 of 7585 State Hwy. 29, a resident of the St. Johnsville Nursing Home since December 2006, died there Thursday evening May 17, 2007. Bill was born on February 27, 1921 in Oppenheim, the son of Reid and Estella (Johnson) Elwood and was educated in school in Oppenheim school, District 13. A veteran of WW II he served honorably from October 9, 1942 until November 3, 1945 in the Army with 107 Ordinance Company. Bill served in Central Europe, Northern France and Rhineland. He was awarded the American Service Medal, European ? African-Middle Eastern Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. His marriage to the former Ethel M. Sammons took place on January 20, 1946 at the home of the bride?s parents in the town of Oppenheim. Mrs. Elwood predeceased him on April 25, 2003. Bill was employed by the Adirondack Industries of Dolgeville, retiring from there in 1984. He was currently attending Curtis Corner Stone Chapel in the Town of Salisbury. A man of special wit and humor Bill always had a good story or a joke to pass on to all his friends. He is survived by Sister in laws Muriel DeLucco and Marguerite Sammons both of York, South Carolina, Brother in laws David and his wife Lois Sammons of St. Johnsville and Frank and his wife Louise Sammons of Oppenheim and their families. He was predeceased by his son William ?Billy? Elwood on January 28, 1974 and his two sisters Nellie Frey and Lillian Jordan. Funeral services will be held on Saturday May 26, 2007 at 11:30 Am at the Roberts & Enea Family Funeral Home 3 Faville Avenue Dolgeville. Pastor Rodney Congdon of the Curtis Corner Stone Chapel will officiate. Burial will follow in Rural Park Cemetery, Inghams Mills. Calling hours are on Friday evening from 6-8 PM at the funeral home. Bill may be remembered with a donation to the S & S Ambulance Corps.
