Obituary of Cecelia Gahan

ILION-Mrs. Cecelia "Sally" Gahan, 90, formerly of W. Clark St., a longtime Ilion resident, passed away on Monday evening, November 5, 2007 in Valley Health Services, Herkimer. Sally was born on March 5, 1917, in Middleville, daughter of the late Frank and Lourena (Luther) McNinney and was educated in the Owen D. Young Central School. She furthered her education attending St. Elizabeth's School of Nursing. On February 16, 1950, Sally was united in marriage with Andrew F. Gahan, a union of 44 years until Mr. Gahan's passing on Nov. 6, 1994. Sally was employed as a home health nurse for many families throughout the Mohawk Valley and also graciously welcomed patients into her own home, nursing them back to health. In her spare time, she enjoyed painting and baking for family and friends. Sally had a "green thumb" and loved nothing more than working in her garden, which consisted of any flower imaginable. She always took part in her children's lives and was proud to be a den mother during their earlier years. A beloved mother and grandmother, her family will hold the precious memories close to their hearts. She attended the Church of the Annunciation, Ilion. She leaves two sons: Edward Gahan and wife Sheila of Ilion and William Gahan and wife Gwen also of Ilion; nine cherished grandchildren: Douglas and Eric Gahan, Kristin Bennett, Adrienne Gahan, Paula Gahan, Billy Gahan, Andrew Gahan, Garrett Conroy and Kayla Conroy; her great grandchildren: Logan, Hayley, Kylie, Lauren, Samantha, Mia and Mason; a sister: June Leon of Ilion; many nieces, nephews and cousins She was predeceased by her husband Andy; by a brother: Orson McNinney; and by a brother in law: Harold Leon. The family will be present in the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion to receive relatives and friends on Thursday, November 8, 2007 from 5-8 p.m. Sally's funeral will commence on Friday, Nov. 9, 2007 at 9:15 am from the chapel of the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home where prayer will be offered and at 10 am from the Church of the Annunciation, Ilion, where the Rev. Alfred Lamanna, will celebrate her Mass of Christian Burial. Procession will follow to Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer where she will be laid to rest. Kindly consider memorial offerings to the Ilion Ambulance Fund; envelopes will be available at the funeral parlor. The family would like to offer their deepest gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Valley Health Services, Herkimer, especially mentioning those on 2 West for the care and compassion offered to Sally and her family.
