Obituary of Helen Garlock

MOHAWK - Helen M. Garlock, age 84, of 58 Church St., Mohawk, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica. She was born on Dec. 26, 1922 in Herkimer, the daughter of William and Katherine (Dypa) Barscz and graduated from St. Francis de Sales School and Herkimer High School. On Nov. 29, 1947, she was married to George T. Garlock in Herkimer. He died on March 27, 1996. In her early years, Helen was employed at Remington Arms Company and Lane Construction Company. She later taught adult education in sewing, slip covers and drapery at Mohawk Central School and Steuben School. Helen was also a teachers aide at Fisher School in Mohawk. She was a bookkeeper at Mohawk Homestead and later for her daughter Dr. Priscilla Garlock. For many years, Helen enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting, which she became extremely good at. She enjoyed playing the piano and was active in various local choirs. Helen was a member of the Relay for Life Team Cassandra. She was a member of the Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post Auxiliary, Mohawk Valley General Hospital Guild and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels at one time. Survivors include three daughters and one son-in-law, Dr. Priscilla Garlock and Colleen Garlock of Herkimer, Heidi and Stephen Alday of Port Charlotte, Fla.; one grandson, Andrew Kelsey and his wife, Rebecca of Syracuse; one great-granddaughter, Alaina Kelsey; several nieces, nephews, cousins and one aunt, Gladys Dypa of Herkimer. She was predeceased by two brothers, John and Walter Barscz. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007 at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion and at 11 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer, where a funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Mark Cunningham, pastor. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer. Calling hours are 5-8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007 at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, Ilion. Anyone needing a ride to calling hours or services may call the funeral home at 895-7722 for complimentary transportation assistance. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to Team Cassandra Relay for Life or American Diabetes Association.
