Obituary of Peter Merena

Mr. Peter M. Merena, 61, of Pine Grove Rd., East Herkimer, passed away unexpectedly in the town of Saugerties, NY. His untimely passing was the result of injuries that he received in a tractor trailer mishap while traveling on the New York State Thruway shortly after leaving his home. He was born on September 8, 1945 in Herkimer, son of Peter A. and Helen D. (Devera) Merena and was educated in Herkimer schools. On October 30, 1971, Peter was united in marriage with Janice Ivan in Trinity Lutheran Church, Herkimer; a dedicated union of 35 years. Prior to driving for Richard Obreza Trucking, Peter owned and operated "Peter's Market" in Dolgeville for fifteen years. He was a member of the East Herkimer Fish and Game Club. A devoted sports fan, Peter loved watching New York Yankees, Rangers, Cowboys and also NASCAR. He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his canine companion, Tasha. A fun loving husband, father, and grandfather he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his wife: Janice of East Herkimer; his parents: Peter and Helen Merena of Herkimer; two sons: Kyle Merena of Herkimer and Kelly Merena and Katie Baker of Herkimer; a daughter: Stephanie Wiegand and husband Tim of Las Vegas, NV; three sisters: Karran Swayze of Youngstown, Maryann Dolence and husband Michael of California and Sylvia Malone and husband Tom of Ilion; two cherished grandchildren: Allison and Grace Wiegand; three aunts: Catherin, Helen, and Lucia Devera; his mother in law and father in law: Alice and Stephen Ivan of Herkimer; in-laws: Barbara Holmes and husband Richard of Ames, NY and Donna Wilcox and husband Jack of Herkimer; an aunt: Lucia Devera of Herkimer; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by many aunts and uncles. The family will be present in the Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., (between Ilion and Frankfort), 894-8000, to receive relatives and friends on Sunday, May 20, 2007 from 3-7 p.m. Mr. Merena's funeral will commence at 10 am on Monday morning, May 21 st from the chapel of the funeral home. Procession will follow to St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery, town of Herkimer, where he will be laid to rest. Arrangements are being made by the Holleran & Enea Family Funeral Home of Herkimer.
