Obituary of Gertrude Miers

Gertrude E. Miers, age 83, formerly a long time resident of 330 E. Main St., Ilion, currently residing at Galinsky Apartments, Herkimer, passed away Sunday, March 4, 2007, at Valley Health Services, Herkimer, following a brief illness. Gertrude was born Nov. 11, 1923, in West Winfield, daughter of the late Charles and Elizabeth (Lamphere) Knowles. She was a graduate of West Winfield Schools. On July 31, 1948, she was united in marriage to Lawrence E. Miers in Mohawk. They shared a blessed union of 52 years until Mr. Miers' passing on Nov. 26, 2000. Gertrude was last employed as a clerk at Burns Pharmacy in Mohawk. At one time she was a telephone operator and worked for MDS. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star, enjoyed crafts and following her grandchildren's activities and sport events. Gertrude's beloved family was always the most important thing in her life. Survivors include two sons, Gary Miers and his wife Karen of Ilion, Ronald Miers and his companion Diane Brown of North Carolina; her cherished grandchildren, Ronald J. Miers II and his wife Kristina of Connecticut, Melissa Leah Kapernaros of Connecticut, Erin Teras Sanchez and her husband Jason of Herkimer, and Christopher Knowles Miers of Rochester; one great-granddaughter, Hannah Kay Sanchez, and one on the way; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Mary Miers of Mohawk, several nieces, nephews and cousins including Edward and Dottie Burdick of Johnstown, and Juanita Lamphere of Cedarville. She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence, and her sister and brother, William and Dorothy Knowles. Gertrude's funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 7, 2007, commencing at 11 a.m. at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion, with the Rev. Robert Wollaber, pastor of the Ilion United Methodist Church, officiating. Family and friends are invited to visitation Wednesday from 9-11 a.m. prior to the funeral service at the funeral home. Interment in Mohawk Cemetery will take place this spring at a date and time to be announced. In lieu of floral offerings, please consider memorials in Gertrude's name to the Ilion United Methodist Church. Donation envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
