Obituary of Michael Murphy

BALLSTON SPA/MANHEIM-Mr. Michael Leo Murphy, 82, of 116 Sweetman Road, Ballston Spa, formerly of the town of Manheim, passed away at his home on Sunday evening, May 6, 2007. He was born on November 5, 1924 in East Herkimer, son of the late John and Caroline (Rathbun) Murphy, and was educated in Mohawk schools. September 12, 1942 began a wonderful union of 64 years when Michael was united in marriage with the former Anna Woroby in Little Falls. For over thirty years Mr. Murphy was a self-employed dairy farmer and owned and operated the East Creek Farm in the town of Manheim. He and his wife have resided in Ballston Spa since 1984. In 1942, Mr. Murphy answered the call of duty when he enlisted with the United States Marine Corps. A proud Marine, he served during World War II and participated in action against the enemy in New Georgia Group from September 3, 1943 to February 13, 1944 and at Okinawa from April 6, 1945 until August 14, 1945. He was awarded the certificate of satisfactory service and was honorably discharged in Bainbridge, Md., in November of 1945, holding the rank of Sergeant. Mr. Murphy had a passion for horses and was a member of the US Trotting Association and the Saratoga Harness Horseman?s Association. Survivors include his beloved family; his wife of 64 years, Anna of Ballston Spa; two children: Peter Murphy of Charlton and Monica Ovedovitz and husband Irving of Loudenville; a brother: Edward Murphy and wife Nancy of Ilion; a sister Anne McGraw of Glens Falls; two grandchildren: David M. Ovedovitz of Alexandria, Va., and Caroline Rostkowski and husband Kenneth of Waldwick, NJ; three step-grandchildren: Nancy Ovedovitz and husband Eric Findlay, Vicky Wilson and husband Michael, and Donna Ritz and husband Peter; five great grandchildren: Seth, Zachary and Peter Ritz, Susan Findlay and Mathew Wilson ; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Also surviving is in laws: Olga Gudzy of Jacksonburg, Edward Woroby of St. Johnsville, Mary Murphy and Verna Woroby both of Jacksonburg and Shirley Murphy of Ilion. He was predeceased by four brothers: Francis Murphy, Frederick Rathbun, Robert Murphy and John Murphy and by two sisters: Margaret Thomes and Helen White. Relatives and friends are invited to visitation at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe St., Little Falls, on Tuesday, May 8, 2007, from 5-7 p.m. His funeral will commence at 1 p.m. in the funeral home on Wednesday, May 9, 2007 with the Rev. Anthony Ligato, pastor of Holy Family Parish, Little Falls, officiating. Procession will follow to Rural Park Cemetery, Inghams Mills, where he will be laid to rest and full military honors will be accorded by the U.S. Marine Corps.
