Obituary of Jean Potter

ILION - MOHAWK - Jean Jones Potter, 78, passed away with her family at her side in her home in Baldwinsville on Sunday, June 3, 2007. Jean was born June 4, 1928 in Herkimer, the daughter of Everett C. and Vera (Lawton) Jones. She was a graduate of Mohawk High School, class of 1948, and a graduate of Syracuse University, class of 1950. At one time she was married to George L. Potter MD, the father of her children. She taught in Fulton, the Chicago, Illinois public school system and The Harris School of Chicago. Mrs. Potter then taught English for grades 7-9 in the Ilion School District as well as being advisor of the IHS Drama Club, retiring in 1988. She was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association and the Eastern Star of Mohawk. She had been a member in the past of the Ilion Little Theater. Jean was a volunteer at the General Nicholas Herkimer Home in Little Falls for many years where she enjoyed demonstrating hearth side cooking, making candles and soap. Survivors include two daughters, Janice P. Miller of Webster and Susan P. Nicholson of Baldwinsville, N.Y. with whom Jean resided; two grandsons, Benjamin Miller of Denver, Colo. and James Nicholson of Baldwinsville; her brother and sister-in-law, Donald R. and Ann (Smith) Jones; her brother-in-law and his wife, Edwin and Lee Potter of Dewitt; her sister-in-law; Mildred Potter Plumley of Guatemala. She had several nephews and nieces. Calling hours for family and friends will be from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, June 9, 2007 at the Applegate and Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion. Family may attend Jean's graveside committal service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 16 at the Armory Hill Cemetery with Rev. Edwin Potter officiating. Donation envelopes for memorial contributions in Jean's name to the Shriners' Children Hospital will be available at the funeral home.
