Obituary of Walter Rumrill

Stratford Dateline Walter H. Rumrill 77 of 333 Hadcock Road Stratford, died Wednesday May 30, 2007 at his residence after a brief illness. Walt was born on November 14, 1929 in Stratford, the son of Carl and Delida (Voorhees) Rumrill and was educated in schools in Stratford and Dolgeville. A veteran of Korea he served in the United States Army from August 1948 until he was honorably discharged on June 2, 1952, with the rank of Corporal. A wounded veteran he received the following medals, The Purple Heart, Korean Service Medal w/5 bronze service Stars, Two Overseas Bars, Combat Infantryman?s Badge, Occupation Medal (Japan), Presidential Unit Citation and the Distinguished Unit Citation. His first marriage was to Mavis A. Jodway who died in 1969. He then married Fannie Hadcock on April 10, 1971 in Dolgeville. She predeceased him on October 5, 1984. Walt was employed as a truck driver and machine operator for the Talerico ? Talison Construction Company of Danube and also the DeLia Construction Company of Northville. He was a member of the Stratford Fire Department, a Life member of the Salisbury Fire Department where he served as a Fire Chief, a social member of the Hilltop Fire Department, and a former member of the VFW Post of Dolgeville. He especially enjoyed fishing, hunting and cutting firewood for his friends and his family. He is survived by his Children ? His Sons and their wives Walter and Kathy Rumrill Jr. Gary and Lorraine Rumrill, Edgar and Norma Rumrill and Frederick Rumrill, his Daughters and their husbands Mary and Scott Pollard, Pam and Bill Chmielewski, Cathleen and Richard Madison and Leona and Ralph Smith, his step children Gary, Ronald and Keith Briggs, Pamela Chrisman, Myrna Grosse and Debbie Briggs, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, His Brothers Mallee Rumrill and Robert Rumrill both of Johnstown and his Sister Dorothy Christman of Little Falls, Special neighbors Harry and Karen Jaquay, John and Joan Ploss and Harold Lake. He was predeceased by a step son Richard Briggs. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. There are No Calling hours. Walt may be remembered with a contribution to Mt. Valley Hospice 73 North Main St. Gloversville, NY 12078 or to one of the Fire Departments that he and his family belong to.
