Obituary of Esther Steenburgh

GERMAN FLATTS-Mrs. Esther C. Steenburgh, 76, of State Route 168, Mohawk (Town of German Flatts), and since 2001 a resident of Valley Health Services, Herkimer, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday morning, November 13, 2007 in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown. She was born on October 18, 1931 in Carlisle, the daughter of the late D. Schuyler and Maria (Kniskern) Crosby and educated in Montgomery County schools. She graduated from Prairie High School in Alberta, Canada and also from the Prairie Bible Institute. She has been a Mohawk Valley resident since 1971. June 29, 1957 began a loving and devoted union of 46 years when she was united in marriage to John L. Steenburgh in the Faith Bible Church in Carlisle. Mr. Steenburgh passed away on November 18, 2003. Esther spent many years taking wonderful care of her entire family. She will be missed for her tender love and care she provided to anyone that entered her home. For many years she graciously welcomed foster children into her home. Esther was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church, Little Falls, where she was also a Sunday school teacher and belonged to the Child Evangelism Fellowship. Survivors include her loving family: her sons: John P. Steenburgh and wife Carrie of Gloversville, and Matthew J. Steenburgh and wife Erin of Paines Hollow; her daughters: Mary Prokopienko and husband John of Paines Hollow, and Martha Higgins and husband Steven of Ilion; a brother: Howard Crosby of Carlisle; sisters: Kathryn Crockett and husband Ellsworth of W. Poultney, Vermont, Frances Lovestrand and husband John of Apopka, Fl., and Loretta Koehn and husband Robert of Alberta, Canada; eleven cherished grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a daughter in law: Melissa Steenburgh and by two grandsons: Daniel and Josiah. The family will be present in the Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St., Herkimer, to receive relatives and friends on Thursday, November 15, 2007 from 4-7 p.m. Mrs. Steenburgh's funeral will commence at 11 am on Friday, Nov. 16 at the First Baptist Church, Albany Street, Little Falls with the Rev. Chris Wintermute, pastor, officiating. A funeral reception will be held in the church gathering hall immediately following the service. Funeral procession will then follow to Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda, where she will be laid to rest. Kindly consider memorial offerings to the First Baptist Church; envelopes and donations may be made at the funeral home. The family would like to thank the staff at Valley Health Services, Herkimer for their wonderful and outstanding concern and professionalism in attending to Esther since she became a resident there in 2001. Mrs. Steenburgh was very active at the nursing home, taking part in many activities including the Residents Counsel where she served as President.
