Obituary of Arletta Sweeney

Arletta M. "Letty" Sweeney, age 88, a longtime Ilion resident, passed away Monday, March 26, 2007, at Faxton-St. Lukes -Healthcare with her loved ones by her side. Letty was born August 21, 1918 in Frankfort, daughter of the late Floyd B. and Laura Armstrong. She attended Frankfort schools. At one time she was married to John F. Sweeney, the father of her children. Mr. Sweeney passed away September 17, 1994. She was last employed at ICL in Utica, prior to that she worked at Univac. At one time Letty tended bar at the Ilion Hotel and then JD's Lounge. She enjoyed playing bridge, crafts, cross-stitching, going to the casino and her trips to Las Vegas. Letty was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to her beloved family. Survivors include her children, Kenneth J. Sweeney and his wife, TJ, currently of the United Arab Emirates, Terrance Sweeney and his wife, Christine of VT, John F. "Jack" Sweeney and his wife, Sandy of Newport, Deborah Tennant and her husband, Donald of Cedarville, David T. Sweeney and his wife, Donna of Ilion; daughter-in-law, Bev Sweeney of Ilion; her cherished grandchildren, Boonchung "Ott" Sweeney, Kenneth and Kevin Sweeney, Jacqueline Sweeney, Michele Rowland, Brad Sweeney, Matthew Tennant, Stephanie Malinowski, Ryan Sweeney and Kaitlyn Sweeney; many great-grandchildren; her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Betty Armstrong of W. Winfield, Kathleen Gage and her husband, Gerald of Ilion, Bernice Wright of Ilion, Lanny and Carol Sweeney of Ilion, and Marie Hamiester of Richfield Springs; many nieces and nephews; and a special cousin, Evelyn Riele of Herkimer. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Clyde and Floyd Armstrong. Family and friends are invited to visitation Thursday, March 29, 2007, from 5-7 p.m. at the Applegate and Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion. Letty's funeral service will be held Thursday, commencing at 7 p.m. at the funeral home following visitation with Rev. Robert Wollaber, Pastor of the Ilion United Methodist Church, officiating. In lieu of floral offerings, please consider memorials in Letty's name to the Herkimer County Humane Society or the Steven Swan Humane Society. Donation envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
