Obituary of Alton Woodbeck

HERKIMER-Alton Leon Woodbeck, 62, of Herkimer, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday morning, August 7, 2007 in Valley Health Services, Herkimer, after a long, courageous battle with cancer under the care of his loving family. Relatives and friends are invited to memorial calling hours at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St., Herkimer, on Monday, Aug. 13, 2007 from 4-6 p.m. A memorial service will commence at the conclusion of calling hours 6 p.m. on Monday with Pastor Joseph Servello of Mt. Zion Ministries, officiating. The United States Army will offer military honors. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family. He was born on December 23, 1944 in Decatur, NY, son of the late Howard and Lillian (Tompkins) Woodbeck, Sr., and educated in Cherry Valley Schools. A proud United States Veteran, he served with the Army enlisting in 1963 and was honorably discharged in 1966. Alton was united in marriage with Pamela Macrina on December 5, 1970 in Hartwick, with whom he enjoyed a loving union of 36 and a-half years. In his earlier years Alton was employed with various area farms and was last employed with the New York State Thruway Authority, Schuyler in the McDonalds Restaurant. Alton and his wife attended Mt. Zion Ministries, Utica. Alton went above and beyond expectations in everything he did and especially when helping others. He gave physically and emotionally to everyone he came into contact with. His was most content when working the land and enjoying fresh air whenever possible. He was a serious and responsible provider for his family and was cherished by his family and friends. Alton also enjoyed taking care of animals. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his loving family; his wife Pamela of Herkimer; a daughter: Sheri Woodbeck-Chabrier of Ilion; three sons: Steven Woodbeck and wife Colleen of Athens; Christopher Woodbeck and wife Angela of Minnesota, and Jeremy Woodbeck of MInnesota; Alton's cherished grandchildren: Anthony J., Anyssa and Amelio Chabrier of Ilion and Andrew, Conner, and Larissa of Athens; brothers: Carlton Woodbeck and wife Cathy of Hartwick, Raymond Woodbeck and wife Lenora of Hartwick, Leland Woodbeck of Hartwick, Herbert Woodbeck and wife Jo of Cornwallville; in laws: Sandra and George Majka of New York Mills, Cheryl and Dave Culver of Little Falls, Sharon and Bill Gifford of Mayfield, Michael and Joellen Macrina of New Hartford and Janice Miller of Mayfield; many nieces, nephews and cousins; several friends including Buddy and Katy Praetorius, Linda and Sonny Maxwell, Enzio Cullella, Tiny his pet dog and his extended family at Mt. Zion Ministries. Alton was predeceased by his brothers: Howard Woodbeck, Jr., and Herman Woodbeck and by his inlaws: Joseph Madison, Corrine and Joe Short, Walter Madison, John "Jack" Miller, and Melvin Yager. The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Chuck Schermerhorn and also to the doctors, nurses and staff affiliated with Hospice Care, Inc., Valley Health Services, Herkimer and Faxton/St. Luke's Hospital, New Hartford. This entire group of outstanding professionals extended their services with understanding, concern and care. Thanks also to the family of Mt. Zion Ministries for many prayers and numerous kindnesses.
