Obituary of William Busher

William F. ?Bill? Busher, 86, of 29 Michigan St., Mohawk, who has resided on Michigan Street for more than 50 years, passed away Tuesday evening, Oct. 24, 2006, at Little Falls Hospital. Bill was born Oct. 22, 1920, in Cohoes, N.Y., son of the late Harry and Sylvia (McCullough) Busher. He was a graduate of Mohawk High School ?Class of 1938? and went on to graduate from Morrisville A&M College ?Class of 1941.? A proud veteran of World War II, Bill was drafted into the Army Air Corps on Dec. 21, 1942. After completing basic training, Bill was assigned to the 401st Bomber Squadron of the 8th Air Force. During the D-Day invasion of Europe, he was flying over France in a B-17 Bomber, as a flight engineer and top turret gunner. Bill was honorably discharged on Nov. 8, 1945, at the Rome Air Base. Mr. Busher was awarded the following medals and citations in recognition of his dedicated service; The Distinguished Flying Cross, the World War II Victory Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Medal with three Bronze Stars, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Conspicuous Service Cross with four Silver Shields. Bill was united in marriage to Eunice J. Smith on July 3, 1948, at the Mohawk Reformed Church. They shared a blessed and devoted union of 58 years. He was last employed by Burrill Saw and Tool Co. in Mohawk for many years. Prior to that he worked at Quackenbush Auto Parts. A skilled mechanic, Bill enjoyed building model airplanes as a hobby, and loved sports, especially football. He was a member of the Mohawk Reformed Church, Mohawk American Legion Crowley-Barnum Post 25, and at one time was an active member of the Drill Team. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, his family always came first. He was known as a kind gentleman who got along with everyone. Survivors include his loving wife, Eunice at home; one son, William Busher and his wife Elaine of East Syracuse; two daughters, Ellen Gregory and her husband Donald of Ilion, Susan Traxler and her husband Robert of Illinois; his cherished grandchildren, Stephanie LeMere and her husband Phillip of Pleasant Valley, Brian Busher and his wife Tracy of Boston, and Erin Busher of Atlanta; two great-grandchildren, Alexis and Joshua LeMere, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Harriet Busher. Mr. Busher's funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 28, commencing at 10 a.m. at the Graves-Applegate-Day Funeral Home, 48 E. Main St., Mohawk, with the Rev. Brian Engel, pastor of the Mohawk Reformed Church, officiating. Procession to Mohawk Cemetery for interment with full military honors will follow. Family and friends are invited to visitation Friday from 5-7 p.m. at the Graves-Applegate-Day Funeral Home, Mohawk. The Mohawk American Legion will conduct their ritual service at 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
