Obituary of Mary Carney

Mary Margaret (McArdell) Carney, 82, currently of Forge Hill Estates, Ilion, a long time Ilion resident passed away Thursday evening, March 16, 2006 at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare with her family by her side. Mrs. Carney was born Jan. 3,1924 in Syracuse, daughter of the late George and Agatha (Sawmiller) McArdell. She was a graduate of North Syracuse High School and Crouse Irving School of Nursing. She continued her education at SUNY Oneonta, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in School Nurse Teaching. Mrs. Carney was employed as the Director of In-service Education at the Mohawk Valley General Hospital until her retirement. She was united in marriage to Dr. Theodore R. Carney, Feb. 23, 1946. She was parishioner of Annunciation and served as a Eucharistic Minister. Mrs. Carney is survived by her eight children, Bridget Goddard and her husband, Herbert, of Rhinebeck, N.Y., Mary Houlihan and her husband Michael, of River Forest, Ill., Erin Monahan and her husband, William, of Fairport, N.Y., Theodore Carney, of Utica, Kathleen Donahue and her husband, Peter, Roberta Haefele, Aileen Sweeney, Shawn Carney and his wife, Gail, all of Ilion. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Morgan Friedman, Thatcher Goddard, Paul and his wife, Andrea, Mark, Katherine, and Sarah Donahue, Padraic and William Houlihan, Lauren and Alison Haefele, Steven and Catherine Carney, Mary Bridget, Erin, and Sean Sweeney, Timothy and Michael Monahan and great grandchildren, Emma and Ryan Donahue. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Francis Cooper and his three children Margaret, James, and Sheila and a special cousin, Mary Hanley. Calling hours are Sunday, March 19, 2006 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion. Her funeral will be Monday, March 20, 2006 at 9:15 a.m. from Applegate & Day Funeral Home, Ilion and 10 a.m. at the Church of Annunciation where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Anthony Barratt. Interment will take place later in the spring in Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer. Memorial contributions in Mrs. Carney's memory may be made to Catholic Charities.
