Obituary of Joseph Cirillo

Joseph A. Cirillo, age 81 of 49 Church St., Mohawk, died Thursday, May 18, 2006 at Valley Health Services, Herkimer, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was born on June 15, 1924 in Mohawk, the son of Joseph A. and Victoria (Cristello) Cirillo and graduated from Mohawk High School in 1942. Joe was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. On September 7, 1946, he was married to Rose Minosh at Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk. Joe was employed as a Postal Clerk at the Mohawk Post Office for 31 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, a 50-year member of the Mohawk American Legion Post #25 and a former member of the Mohawk Cemetery Commission. Joe was an avid fisherman. Survivors include his wife Rose; three daughters and sons-in-law, Victoria and Thomas Whittaker of Norwich, NY, Angela and James Traglia of Mohawk and Julie Rose and Kevin Joyce of Ilion; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph A. III and Maryann Cirillo of Mohawk and Thomas and Marie Cirillo of Vestal, NY; thirteen grandchildren, David Whittaker and his wife Ann Marie of Chester, VT, Katherine Whittaker of Fishkill, NY, Joseph M. and Mary Cirillo of Mohawk, Michael, Daniel, Emily and Thomas Cirillo of Vestal, NY, James A. and Christy Traglia of Mohawk, Paul, Juliana and Matthew Joyce of Ilion; his brother, Patrick Cirillo of Mohawk; his sister, Mary Storino of Watertown, NY; and his sister-in-law, Viola Cirillo of Mohawk; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his grandson, Jonathan Matthew Cirillo; three brothers, Dominick, Michael and Frank Cirillo; and two sisters, Theresa Sanzo and Jennie Gillette. Friends and relatives are invited to attend funeral services 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 23, 2006 at Blessed Sacrament Church, E. Main St., Mohawk, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Mark Cunningham, Sacramental Minister, assisted by Sister Mary Jo Tallman, Parish Life Director. Interment will be in Mohawk Cemetery with full military honors. Calling hours are Monday, May 22, 2006 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Enea Family Funeral Home, Main St., between Ilion and Frankfort. The Mohawk American Legion service will be held 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Blessed Sacrament Church, the Central NY Parkinson's Support Group Inc. of Herkimer, or the Herkimer County Food Pantry. Special envelopes are available at the funeral home. The family wishes to thank the first floor staff at Valley Health Services for the excellent care and compassion shown to Joe and his family.
