Obituary of William Clarkin

William H. "Bill" Clarkin, 84, of Albany, went home to be with the Lord on Monday morning, May 29, 2006 St. Luke's Hospital. He was born on March 1, 1922 in Whitestown, son of the late Harry and Mary (Scouten) Clarkin and graduated from the Westmoreland High School "Class of 1939." William pursued his education for many years thereafter, having studied at Hamilton College, the University of Western Ontario where he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts Degree, the University of Ottawa where he was awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy, and Rutgers University where he received a Masters in Library Science. Initially, William served Bennett College in Poughkeepsie as a history professor. When his work at Bennett was complete, he then taught history at the University of Albany. William finished his career in education as Chief Bibliographer of the University of Albany Library and served as Lecturer at the Albany School of Library and Information Science. William was passionate about American History and also enjoyed the arts. He was a member of the Print Club of Albany, serving as club president for nine years. He enjoyed any opportunity to research and lecture on a historic figure or artist and finally, he enjoyed reading, his book collection, and his flower gardens. A devout catholic who put religion first in his life, William was a communicant of Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church in Frankfort. William resided at Denicola's Easy Living Home in Ilion for the past eighteen months, where he was content and lived in comfort. His family is grateful for the care and attention he received from proprietors Carmen and Susan Denicola. Survivors include his sister: Mary Warner of Whitesboro; brother and sister in law: James and Susan Clarkin of Holland Patent; nieces and nephews: Lynne and Ed Warner of Clinton, Alice Wright of Westmoreland, Gail and Bill Warner of Baldwinsville, Elizabeth Warner of Whitestown, Robert O'Malley of Syracuse, Jean Tomlinson of Lee, Massachusetts, Christopher and Dorene Clarkin of Floyd, Phyllis and Joe Stehr of Scotia, Mike Clarkin of Utica, and Penny Clarkin of Floyd. Also surviving is his close cousin: Robert Quinn of Kirkland and his close friends: Michael, Denise, and Zachary Green of Niskayuna. He was predeceased by a brother: Eugene Clarkin of Clark Mills and a sister Winifred O'Malley of Penn Yann; and nephews: Alan Clarkin and James Clarkin both of Holland Patent. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Enea Family Funeral Home, Main Street between Frankfort and Ilion, (894-8000), on Wednesday, May 31, 2006 from 5-8 p.m. William Clarkin's funeral will begin at 9:15 am on Thursday morning, June 1, from the chapel of the funeral home where prayer will be offered thence to Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church, Frankfort, where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am by the Rev John Yanas, Jr., pastor.
