Obituary of Mary Cowell

Mary E. Cowell, 82, currently of 100 W. Main St., a long time Ilion resident, passed away on Thursday morning, June 1, 2006 in Faxton/St. Luke's Healthcare, New Hartford, following an extended illness. Mary was born on Sept. 16, 1923, in Holland Patent, the daughter of Daniel J. and Ellen (Neary) Goggin and graduated from Holland Patent High School and also graduated from Utica School of Commerce. On June 7, 1952, Mary was joined in marriage with Charles E. ?Chuck? Cowell in Holland Patent, a blessed and devoted union of 52 years. She began her working career as a bookkeeper and was formerly employed by GLF, of Utica, Remsen, and Herkimer. In 1950 she began her career as a waitress. Mary was employed with several local restaurants in Herkimer County and most recently with McGills in the town of Schuyler. Mary considered as the foremost priority in her life her combined rolls of wife, mother and grandmother. She was a giving and dedicated parent and was a constant source of support for her loved ones. A devoted and generous grandmother and great-grandmother, she was always willing to go far out of her way for the benefit of her family. Mary took tremendous pride in her Irish-American heritage. She will be sadly missed by all her family and friends. Survivors include her husband: Charles ?Chuck? Cowell of Ilion; a daughter: Mary Brandano and husband Patrick of Parkland, Fla.; two sons: Charles Cowell III and fianc?e Gina Dugay of Brooklyn and Daniel Cowell and wife MaryAnn of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters: Kathleen McClusky of Newport and Helen Steeves of Frankfort; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by four brothers: Daniel, Cornelius, Alexander and John Goggin. Family and friends are invited to visitation at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion, on Sunday afternoon, June 4, 2006 from 3-6 p.m. Mary's funeral will be held on Monday, June 5, commencing at 9:15 a.m. from the Applegate & Day Funeral Home, Ilion, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. from the Church of the Annunciation, West St., Ilion, with the Rev. Alfred Lamanna officiating. Funeral procession will follow to Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer, where she will be laid to rest.
