Roy Wagner Edick, age 80, of 460 Otsego St., Ilion, went to his heavenly home to join the Lord and his loved ones on Wednesday afternoon, November 1, 2006. He passed away at the Mohawk Valley Nursing Home, Ilion. Roy was born December 21, 1925 at his family home outside Ilion, son of the late Ross John and Reba (Wagner) Edick. Following graduation from Ilion High School in June of 1944, he entered the U.S. Army. During WWII, Roy served in the European Theater of War as a member of General Patton's 3rd Army, 1st Platoon H Co., 328th Combat Team, 26th Infantry (Yankee Division). He qualified for the Combat Infantry Badge and two Campaign Battle Stars. At the close of WWII, he was transferred to U.S. Forces in Austria (U.S.A.F.). For 10 months, Roy served and lived in an 800-year-old castle in the Austrian Alps taken over by Gen. Mark Clark. The Gmunden Castle served as an enlisted men's rest center. Roy always considered this his "Shangri-La" period. Prior to WWII, the castle was home for an Austrian Forestry School, and during WWII was used by German Soldiers recuperating from wounds and illness. In 1946, Roy entered Utica College of Syracuse University in the first year of its existence. He went on to graduate from Hartwick College, Oneonta in 1950. On August 19, 1950, he married Frances B. Traver, a college classmate, in the First Oneonta Methodist Church. The marriage was blessed by three wonderful sons. During his life, Roy was involved with the family appliance business and accounting work at Sperry Rand UNIVAC and MDS. He also enjoyed working at Doyle Hardware in Utica for 12 years. Roy was a very active lifetime member at the North Columbia United Methodist Church, and for many years acted as Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent, and Youth Leader. For some 20 years, Roy found enjoyment in being part of the Boy Scout movement, serving as committeeman with Ilion Methodist Church's "Troop 8." He enjoyed the fellowship of man and boy in the highest sense, and adult leadership in such activities as camping, hiking, campfires, etc. He was an active member of the American Legion - Ilion Post 920, and became a member of the Sons of the American Revolution - Oriskany Battlefield Chapter. His sense of humor was enjoyed by many. Roy felt blessed with a fine family throughout his life, and felt his life was greatly enriched by knowing so many fine people as he passed through life. He always loved the Mohawk Valley, it's rolling hills, small towns, and the wonderful people. Survivors include his wife, Frances "Fran"; three sons, Ronald John Edick and his wife, Carolyn, of Poughkeepsie, Randall Ross Edick and his wife, Debbie, of Seattle, WA, and Lt. Col. Rudyard Grayson Edick (USAF) and his wife, Darina, of Albany; four grandchildren, Maxwell T., Garrett W., Calvin J., and Christian Ross Roy Edick; one aunt, Marion Edick; two cousins, Carol Wagner and Eileen MacIntyre; several nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Family and friends are invited to visitation Saturday, November 4th, from 4-7 p.m. at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion. The Ilion American Legion Post service will be held Saturday at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Roy's funeral service will be held Sunday, November 5, commencing at 2 p.m. at the North Columbia United Methodist Church (Elizabethtown Rd.) with Pastor Hans Drews officiating. A walking procession to N. Columbia Cemetery for interment with full Military Honors will follow the service. In lieu of floral offerings, please consider memorials in Roy's name to the N. Columbia Methodist Church, or the Boy Scouts of America Troop 8. Donation envelopes will be available at the funeral home and church.
