Obituary of Jacob Eskoff

Jacob "Jake" Eskoff, formerly of Herkimer and a longtime Little Falls resident, passed away on June 20 th in Mohawk Valley Nursing Home, Ilion. He was born in Binghamton, NY on April 3, 1918 the son of the late Ksenia (Lytwin) and George Eskoff, Sr. As a child the family moved to Herkimer where he attended the local schools. Jake was married to Sophie Spurza on May 18, 1946 at the St. Nicholas Church in Little Falls, NY. He served with the Mohawk Armory National Guard and with the US Army Infantry during World War II with the 27th Division of Company I as Staff Sgt. Serving in the Pacific Theater of War from Oct. 15 1940 and honorably discharged on Nov. 5, 1945. He participated in the invasion of Eniwetok, Siapan and Okinawa. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in active duty. Jake was employed by Mohawk Data Sciences, E. Herkimer, retiring in Nov. 1984. He was a communicant of the St. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, E. Herkimer and a member of the church choir. He was a member of L. F. Lodge No. 181 F&AM, Disabled American Veterans Chapter #162, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Elk Lodge No. 42 BPOE, and Staff Sgt. Steve Stefula Post 4612 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a member of the Little Falls AARP Chapter 4367. Jake was an avid sports fan enjoying sports at Syracuse University as well as local sports. Mr. Eskoff is survived by his daughter Ann Michael (Eskoff) Henry, her husband Mark and two cherished grandchildren Justin Richard Henry and Greer Anne Henry of Victor NY; brother George (Helen) Eskoff, sister-in-law Dorthea "Ginger" Eskoff, in-laws Stephen and Rose Spurza and Dr. Michael and Patricia Spurza, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Sophie (Spurza), sisters Sarah Eskoff, Helen Baburchak, Stella Eskoff and brothers John Eskoff and Michael Eskoff. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the Holleran & Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St., Herkimer on Thursday morning at 9:00. A Parastas service will begin at 9:30 at the funeral home on Thursday immediately followed by services at 10am from St. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, East Herkimer with the Very Rev. James M. Jadick, officiating. Interment with full military honors will take place at the St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery, East Herkimer. In lieu of floral offerings, for those wishing, please consider honoring Jake with a donation to St. Peter & Paul Orthodox building fund or Little Falls Hospital Development fund.
