Obituary of William Frederick

William "Bill" H. Frederick, 85, of North Columbia Rd., Ilion, died Sunday, August 6, 2006, at Folts Home, Herkimer. He was born on June 4, 1921 in a farmhouse in Ephratah, NY, the eleventh of 13 children, the son of Norman James and Christine (Grose) Frederick. Bill attended schools in Keck Center and Johnstown, NY. In 1936, he had to quit school in the tenth grade to help his father on their farm. He attained his GED in 1965. Bill served in World War II as a gunner on ships charged with delivering troops and supplies throughout Europe. On June 19, 1943 while delivering supplies to Bandur, Iran, his ship, the SS Henry Knox was torpedoed and sunk in the Indian Ocean. They survived eight days and a fierce hurricane in a lifeboat before making landfall in the Maldive Island group. Within weeks he was reassigned to another ship and back in his gunner position. Before the war was over he served on six different vessels. On November 23, 1946, he was married to Dorothy Virginia Pett at the North Columbia Church. They would have celebrated their 60th Anniversary this year. Bill worked at the Union Fork & Hoe Co., American Hardwall Plaster Co. and the Masonic Home. Mr. Frederick joined the Mohawk Masonic Lodge on March 9, 1964 and held every office, including Master Mohawk Lodge #276, Herkimer District Deputy Grand Master in 1972, 1980 and 1981 and as trustee from 1973 through 1976 and again in 1982 and as Assistant Grand Lecturer of the Herkimer Masonic District. Other Masonic affiliations include memberships in the Mohawk Valley Consistory, Scottish Rite Club (president 1976 and 1981), member of Ziyara Temple, patron of the Mohawk Chapter OES and a member of the Oriental Court, Order of Amaranth. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, Latter Day Saints. Bill was also a former director of the Herkimer County Fair Board, assistant scout master of Troup 37 of North Columbia and secretary of the Masonic Co-Ed Bowling League. He was an avid New York Yankees fan, fisherman, bowler and card player. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; his sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Patty Frederick of Charlotte, NC, Norman and Rebecca Frederick of Frankfort; his daughter and son-in-law, Jeanette and Daniel Harakis of Herkimer; six grandchildren, Courtney, Colby, Larry and Kara Frederick, Dennis Morris and Teddy Frederick; several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his son, Irvin and all his brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 10, 2006, at the Church of Jesus Christ, Latter Day Saints, 317 Gros Blvd., E. Herkimer, NY. Interment will follow at North Columbia Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday, August 9, 2006, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion, and on Thursday, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the church prior to the services. Members of the Mohawk Valley Masonic Lodge #276 will conduct their ritualistic services at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Bill's name to the Ziyara Shriners Patient Transportation Services, 251 Genesee St., Utica, NY 13501.
