Obituary of Doris Hagearty

Doris J. (Burbank) Hagearty, age 77, of Oneida St., Sauquoit, formerly of Newington, CT, passed away Tuesday morning, March 21, 2006, following a brief illness at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare with family by her side. Doris was born September 25, 1928 in Hartford, CT, daughter of Henry Babin and Alida (Brault) Burbank. She attended St. Augustine School and was a graduate of Mt. St. Joseph Academy in CT. Doris was last employed at the medical office of Dr. Cheryl Mattern in Ilion. Prior to relocating with family to the Mohawk Valley, Doris was owner of "Secretarial Service of Newington". At one time she was a transcriptionist for the State House of Representatives in Connecticut, secretary for the Constitutional Convention, and worked for several law firms in CT. Doris co-founded the Newington Businesswomen's Assoc. and the Legal Secretaries of Hartford. She was very proud of her church and civic work. Doris co-founded and directed the first Birthright in the state of Connecticut. She chaired the Newington Mental Health Assoc., and organized the Muscular Dystrophy and Heart Assoc. drives. Doris took a leadership role in her church Ladies Guild and the Ladies of Columbus. In addition, she taught religious education, and produced a religious education video that was shown across the State of Connecticut. A lifelong Democrat, Doris chaired several different committees and coordinated and worked on several political campaigns in Connecticut. The most important and cherished accomplishment in her life was being a good wife, mother and grandmother to her family. Survivors include her son, Daniel Hagearty of Sauquoit; two daughters, Karen Hagearty and her partner, Dr. Cheryl Mattern of Sauquoit, and Kathleen Hagearty and her husband, Luis Pagen of New Haven, CT; three cherished grandchildren, Alyssa, Catherine and Patrick; her cousin, Jean Lind of Rocky Hill, CT, who was like a sister to her; and her very special friend, Sr. Marion Raymond Hurley, SND, of East Hartford, CT; and also many beloved family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Attorney Daniel J. Hagearty; and three infant children, Mary, Joseph and Ann Marie. Funeral services in Connecticut will be held Friday, March 24, commencing at 9:15 a.m. at the Rose Hill Funeral Home, 580 Elm St., Rocky Hill, CT, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Elizabeth Seton concelebrated by Doris's cousins, the Revs. Robert and William Burbank. Visitation in Connecticut will be held Thursday, March 23rd, from 6-8 p.m. at Rose Hill Funeral Home. A local memorial service will be held Saturday, April 8, 2006, commencing at 2 p.m. at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion, with Father Paul Drobin officiating. Doris's family will be present to greet friends at the funeral home from 1-2 p.m. prior to the memorial service.
