Obituary of Mary Haggerty

Mary E. Haggerty, 58, a lifelong Little Falls resident, passed away peacefully early Friday morning, November 3, 2006, in the comfort of her home on Churchill Street. She was born in Little Falls, daughter of the late Edward and Margaret (Dise) Haggerty and graduated from the Little Falls High School, "Class of 1965". She furthered her education by attending Utica College then obtaining a masters degree at Syracuse University. Miss Haggerty as she was affectionately known as by co-workers and students was employed by the Little Falls City School District as a fifth grade teacher, a position which she fulfilled with admirable competence and efficiency. She retired two years ago after 34-years of dedicated service. Mary was a faithful member of Holy Family Parish, Little Falls where she served as Eucharistic minister and also on the resurrection ministry. A thorough professional, Miss Haggerty was a teacher's teacher, an educator who truly loved her work, and one who left her mark on her colleagues as surely and effectively as she touched so many of her students. As she fulfilled the central purpose of her career, which was to impart and encourage learning, she made events in her classroom the major focus of her attention and efforts. Personifying academic commitment and social conscience, Mary has always been and will continue to be an exemplary role model for her students, co-workers and friends, as well as all who knew her. Furthermore, as a community minded woman Mary was a person who committed herself to social and community projects often through her active involvement in various organizations including the American Red Cross, Mohawk Valley Chapter, where she belonged for over forty years, was past disaster chairperson, and also responded to Hurricane Hugo, California Earthquakes, North country ice storms, 9/11, and Hurricane Katrina; she was treasurer of the Little Falls Community Chest Board of Directors; Girl Scouts of America, (Foothills Council) serving as past troop leader, national convention delegate, day camp director, council trainer, member of the council awards staff and received the Thanks Badge II which is the highest award accorded to an adult in Girl Scouting; Woman's Christian Association, board of directors; Little Falls Historical Society, past treasurer; Little Falls Hospital Guild, past treasurer and past manager of the coffee shop; Astenrogen Chapter, DAR member; and 25 year member of the Little Falls teacher association serving as past treasurer. Survivors include her cousin: Dr. Joseph Haggerty and wife Diane of Hillsborough, Ca. and many, many dear friends, students, and co-workers. She was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe St., Little Falls, will be on Sunday, Nov. 5, 2006 from 2-4 p.m. Friends are also invited to Miss. Haggerty's funeral which will commence on Monday, Nov. 6, 2006 at 11 a.m. from Holy Family Parish, corner E. Main and John Streets, Little Falls, where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Anthony Ligato, pastor. Procession will follow to Church Street Cemetery, Little Falls, where she will be laid to rest with her parents.
