Obituary of Charles Jennings

Charles F. Jennings, 94, of Ilion, passed away on Sunday, April 30, 2006, at the Mohawk Valley Nursing Home. He passed peacefully while sleeping. He was born on October 26, 1911 in East Frankfort, the son of the late Frank E. Jennings and Minnie Deanault Jennings. He attended Ilion schools. In Herkimer on December 18, 1947, he was married to the former Rose Ganci. Mr. Jennings retired from Remington Arms in 1971 where he was employed as a Filer for over 34 years. Mr. Jennings served in the United States Army from June 1942 to October 1945, attaining the rank of Sergeant. During World War II, he fought in North Africa, where he was briefly held captive by the German Army, Sicily and Normandy, where he was severely wounded. For his service he was awarded the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Jennings was a Life Member of the Utica Stars and Stripes Disabled American Veterans, Ilion Fish and Game Club and the Remington Arms 25 Year Club. In his younger days he was an avid hunter and fisherman. Mr. Jennings is survived by two nieces, Mrs. Donna (Robert) Houseknect and Mrs. Diane Parmalee, both of Norwich; and a nephew, Mr. Frank (Thomasine) Jennings of Ilion. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife in 1987; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Mrs. Lilah (Willard) Sterling, Mrs. Jennie (Stanley) Olsen, Mrs. Bertha (Leland) Backer, Mrs. Margaret (Walter) Conley and Mrs. Marion (Homer) Moss; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Mr. Frank (Helen) Jennings and Mr. Raymond (Ada and Elizabeth) Jennings; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mrs. Mary (Ganci) and Raymond Longeretta; a niece and her husband, Mrs. Jane (Olsen) and Charles Skramko; a nephew, Mr. Charles Conley. Mr. Jennings' funeral will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2006, at 9:00 a.m. from the Applegate and Day Funeral Home, 102 West Street, Ilion. Calling hours at the funeral home are Friday, May 5th, from 5 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frankfort. Please omit floral offerings.
