Obituary of Richard Jorrey

Mr. Richard S. Jorrey 78 of 2760 State Rt. 29 Dolgeville, a former Herkimer County Legislator District 16 and retired Business Manger for the Dolgeville Central School district, died Wednesday August 23, 2006 at St. Elizabeth?s Hospital Utica. A life long resident of the town of Salisbury he was born there on April 19, 1928 the son of the late Robert M. and Elizabeth M. (Snell) Jorrey. His education began in Salisbury Center by graduating from the Salisbury Center Elementary school in 1941. He then attended Dolgeville Central School graduating from there in 1945. He furthered his education by graduating from the Spencer Business School in Schenectady, New York with a degree in Business Administration in 1948. He also attended Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica studying courses in law, accounting and data processing. In September 1948 Dick entered the United State Army and served at the United States Military Academy Preparatory School at Stewart Field, New York until he was honorably discharged in June of 1950 when he became a member of the Army Active Reserve until 1957. His marriage to the former Clara Nickerson took place on July 9, 1950 they recently celebrated 56 years of marriage. Dick was first employed by the H.P. Snyder Manufacturing Company of Little Falls as an accountant and office manger from 1950 until 1969. He then became the Dolgeville Central School account clerk and treasure. In 1971 he was appointed as the Business Manger until his retirement in 1987. After this retirement He continued on an interim basis as the business manger for the Herkimer Central School and the Oppenheim Central School. His political career began in 1957 when he was elected as the Town of Salisbury Supervisor. He then began serving on the Herkimer County Board of Supervisors. He then was elected as the Legislator for District 16 which included the towns of Salisbury, Fairfield and Newport and served a total of 33years. During that time he was instrumental in the building of the Salisbury Town garage, the Herkimer County Home for the Aged in Middleville, the Herkimer County Community College on which he served as a member of the Board of Trustees for a number of years. Along with his wife Clara he assisted in the funding efforts and construction of the Kirby Free Library in Salisbury Center. As a legislator he served as chairman of the Finance, Welfare and Highway Committees. A devoted community person Dick served faithfully in the Salisbury Center Methodist Church where he was the treasure for over 35 years. He was currently the Secretary of the Salisbury Center Grange#624 and a past Master for many years. He was a member of the Spruce Lake Fish and Game Club, a past member of the Salisbury Center Volunteer Fire Department. Dick also served as the President & Treasure of the Stratford & Salisbury Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Dick took great pride in the community of Salisbury and spearheaded many efforts to preserve its past. He was instrumental in having the Salisbury Center Covered Bridge, the Salisbury Center Grange and the Frisbee House placed on the National Register of Historic Places. He also spent many hours of volunteer service in restoring the Fairview Cemetery and maintained its grounds. The Restoration of the Salisbury Grange building which he was presently working on is an ongoing project to which he was devoted to. Throughout his volunteer services to maintain the grounds of the Grange, Church and the Library he always made time for his family. He enjoyed these past years watching his grandchildren in the sports of Basketball, football, baseball and in the theater and music. He is survived by his wife Clara of 56 years, His Son Gregory, a Daughter and her husband Susan and Dr. Kurt Foxton of Clinton, NY, His Brothers and their wives Robert T. and Shirley Jorrey, Wilfred and Susan Jorrey of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, Sisters in law Judy Haberek of Little Falls and Jacki Smith of Newport News, Virginia, his adored grandchildren Lauren Elizabeth Jorrey, Ryan Jorrey, Lee Richard Foxton, Patrick Charles Foxton and Ian Michael Foxton, Nieces and Nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday September 9th, 2006 at 11 AM at the Salisbury Center United Methodist Church. A reception will follow the service at the Salisbury Center Grange to which everyone is invited. There are No Calling hours. Private burial will take place in the Fairview Cemetery in the Town of Salisbury.
