Obituary of Irene Kaples

Irene A. (Edgett) Kaples, 89, a longtime resident of Walnut Street, Mohawk, passed away Tuesday morning, Oct. 3, 2006, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica. Irene was born Feb. 18, 1917, in Little Falls, daughter of the late Robert and Catherine (Guiney) Edgett. She attended school in Little Falls and was a graduate of St. Mary's Academy. Irene was first married to John J. Sklarz, the father of her children. Mr. Sklarz passed away in 1996. On Oct. 21, 1967, she was united in marriage to Reginald F. ?Reggie? Kaples in Frankfort. They shared a blessed union until Reggie's passing Sept. 29, 1994. Together Irene and Reggie were co-owners and operators of ?Reggie's Tavern? in Mohawk for over 30 years. Irene was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, and grandmother whose life was always centered around her beloved family. She was also a caring friend to her many customers through the years, always willing to lend a sympathetic ear. Irene was an avid Yankees fan, enjoyed playing cards with her family, and bingo. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Sharleen and Walter Roginski of Mohawk; three sons, John Sklarz of Florida, William Sklarz and his companion Earlene Casler, both of Mohawk, and Robert Sklarz and his wife Margaret of Newburgh; 13 cherished grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members and her many old friends and neighbors. She was predeceased by Reggie in 1994, her brother, Daniel, sister, Henrietta, and daughters-in-law Carol Sklarz and Elaine Sklarz. Family and friends are invited to visitation Thursday, Oct. 5 from 5-8 p.m. at the Graves-Applegate-Day Funeral Home, 48 E. Main St., Mohawk. Irene's funeral service will be held Friday, Oct. 6 commencing at 10:15 a.m. at the Graves-Applegate-Day Funeral Home, Mohawk, and 11 a.m. at the Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Mark Cunningham, Sacramental minister, assisted by Sister Mary Jo Tallman, Parish Life Director. Procession to Mohawk Cemetery for interment will follow Mass. In lieu of floral offerings please consider memorials in Irene's name to Herkimer County Meals on Wheels or the Herkimer County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
