Obituary of Donald Lonis

Donald E. Lonis, 68 of 1123 Barringer Road, Ilion, passed away on Tuesday November 7, 2006 at his home with his loving family by his side. He was born November 21, 1937 in Ilion the son of the late William Elwood and Julia (Donnelly) Lonis and was educated in St. Mary?s Academy and St. Francis de Sales School. Mr. Lonis was a United State Air Force veteran, from 1954 to 1958, also server with the United States Army National Guard from 1974 -1997. He had severed in the Air Force and Army for 31 years retiring from the Army with the rank of Sergeant First Class. Donald was last employed as a Counter Drug Detachment Commander for the United States Army National Guard, in Fort Drum, NY. From 1965 to 1985 he worked for the Herkimer Police Department, and from 1985 to 1989 he worked for the Herkimer County Sheriff?s Department. Mr. Lonis attended St. Francis de Sales Church, and was a life member of the D.A.V., Misquito Association of the 6147th TAC. CON. GP. Korea, and the Herkimer PBA. He also served as an Assistant Police Academy Director in Herkimer. Survivors include his son, Patrick E. Lonis and fianc?e Pamela Krafft of Millers Mills, NY, 3 daughters, Tammy Thompson and husband Jeffrey of Lisbon Falls, Maine, Deborah Massocco and husband Geno of Ilion, and JoAnn Juteau and husband Jason of Frankfort, a brother, Robert Lonis and wife Marge of Route 5s, Mohawk, 2 sisters, Elizabeth Schneider of Herkimer, and Eleanor Hanley and husband Robert of Canandaigua, and grandchildren, Anthony & Megan Massocco; Joseph Massocco and fianc?e Melissa Gloo; Nicholas Massocco; Vannessa & Tyler Juteau; Michael P. Grau; and Jonathan & Stephanie Thompson; a great grandchild, Mardi P. Grau and many nieces, nephews, cousins, & in-laws. He is also survived by a special friend Jean and many of his other friends. He was pre-deceased by the mother of his children, Joan P. Gallagher Lonis, a brother, William (Sonny) Lonis, twin brother, David F. Lonis, and a sister, Patricia F. Gabriel. Funeral services will be held on Saturday November 11, 2006 at 10:00 am from the Enea Family Funeral Home, Main Street (between Ilion & Frankfort) 894-8000, and at 11:00 from St. Francis de Sales Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Reverend Mark Cunningham, pastor. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Herkimer. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Friday November 10, 2006 from 24- & 6-8 pm. All memorial contributions may be made to D.A.V.
