Obituary of Walter Martyniuk

Walter Martyniuk, 86, of Town of Minden, passed away on Wednesday November 1, 2006 at the St. Johnsville Nursing Home. He was born October 8, 1920 in Poland the son of the late Petro and Mary Katherine (Reichart) Martyniuk and graduated in Poland school. His marriage to Olena Datczuk took place on October 20, 1942. Mr. Martyniuk was employed at the former GE in Utica, where he held the position of Electronic Technician. Walter was an active member of the former St. Nicholas Ukrainian Church in Little Falls. With family as his foremost priority, Walter proved himself a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. Walter was very active with the St. Johnsville Saints and an avid chess player. Another favorite pass time of Walter?s, was gardening. A very educated man, Walter knew 6 different languages which included, Russian, German, Polish, English, Ukrainian, and Latin. For many years, he taught adult classes of Russian and other languages at Fulton Montgomery Community College and evening classes locally. Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Olena, a son, Michael W. Martyniuk and wife Sharon of Herkimer, a daughter, Mary Ann Smith and husband Ronald, of Scotia, a brother, Jerry Martyniuk and Sandra Neely of Dolgeville, a Step-sister, Ann Kulawy of St. Johnsville, 4 grandchildren, Serena Martyniuk of Bristow, VA., Amanda Martyniuk of Herkimer, Shaun Smith of Rochester, and Brian Smith and wife Kimberly of Spencerport, NY, a great granddaughter, Lindsey Autumn Smith and many nieces & nephews. He was pre-deceased by his brothers, Kornel, & Michael Martyniuk and a sister, Katherine Hrynewycz. Funeral services will be held on Monday November 6, 2006 at 11:00 am from the Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville, NY, with Reverend Kenneth Swain, pastor of St. Patrick?s Church officiating. Burial will be in St. Johnsville Cemetery. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Sunday November 5, 2006 from 2-5 pm. Parastas will be held on Sunday Afternoon at 2:00 pm. All memorial contributions may be made to the American Alzheimer?s Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The family would like to express a sincere thank you to the staff and nurses of Little Falls Hospital and the St. Johnsville Nursing Home for the care shown to Walter during his stay.
