Obituary of George Matis

George Matis, Sr., 95, formerly of 30 William St., St. Johnsville, passed away on Saturday June 3, 2006 at the St. Johnsville Nursing Home. He was born January 2, 1911 in Little Falls, the son of the late Jan & Maria (Poruben) Matis and was educated in Little Falls and St. Johnsville schools. George received his GED in 1994 at the age of 83. He was married to the former Frances Schlotzhauer on October 11, 1940. George was a life long dairy farmer on the family farm on Burrell Road in St. Johnsville, and was a member of the St. Johnsville United Methodist Church. As a young man, George was an amateur boxer. He was a former Town of St. Johnsville Councilman and Supervisor, and was a former Chairman of Montgomery County Board of Supervisors. In his later years, George enjoyed making wooden birdhouses and replica building and churches. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Frances of St. Johnsville; his daughter, Jean Gehring and husband Charles of Altamont; and their son, Dietrich Gehring and wife Laurie and their son Wolfgang of Altamont; his son, George Matis, Jr. and wife Susan of St. Johnsville, and their children, Sheri-Lynn Langenbach and husband Brian and their children, Brian Jr., and Daniel of Phoenix, Arizona, Dr. Robert Snyder and wife Jennifer and their children Tasha, Jasmine and Benjamin of Centennial, Colorado; Karin Barrows and husband Chris and their daughter Marley Jane of Centennial, Colorado. George is also survived by his in-laws, Alice Matis, Florence and Arthur Fennimore, Michael & Marietta Wacyk, and Carole Schlotzhauer, and many nieces & nephews. He was pre-deceased by 3 brothers, John, Paul and Daniel Matis and a grandson, Jeffrey Snyder. The family will be receiving friends and relatives at the St. Johnsville Nursing Home (Activities Room) on Tuesday June 6, 2006 from 5-8 pm. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday June 7, 2006 at 11:00 am at St. Johnsville United Methodist Church with Reverend Hans Drews officiating. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of the Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville, NY.
