Obituary of John Miller

Mr. John S. "Hyne" Miller, of 612 E. Gansevoort St., and most recently a resident of Valley Health Services, Herkimer, passed away on Thursday morning, June 8, 2006, in Little Falls Hospital. He was born on June 24, 1913, in Little Falls, the son of the late Frank L. and Mary Anne (Reardon) Miller and graduated from St. Mary's Academy. On October 31, 1942, John was united in marriage with the former Bernice Lynch in St. Mary's Church, Little Falls, with Bernices' uncle, Father Thomas Lynch, officiating. The couple enjoyed a blessed union of 40 years until her passing on August 3, 1983. Blessed with a hard work ethic, John began working at a very young age delivering printed materials to local merchants from his fathers printing shop, "The Art Press". At the age of 13 after his father died he began working at Gilbert's Knitting Mill and also Snyder Manufacturing. During the depression era he was employed with WPA and the Civilian Conservation Corps. and then for McKesson and Robbins Pharmaceutical and GE in Schenectady during the war years. As a young man his last job was as a salesman delivering baked goods for his father in laws bakery. His last professional employment was with Onondaga Wine Merchants, Inc. of Syracuse where he was a distributor of Gallo Wines. He retired after 35 years of dedicated service with the company. Following retirement, John began working with the Enea Family Funeral Home. He became a familiar face at the parlor always greeting visitors with his outgoing personality and friendly smile. John was former member of the Alahambra Society and was a fourth degree member of the former Little Falls Knights of Columbus. He was a communicant of Holy Family Parish, Little Falls. John was a wonderful conversationalist; he loved people and made friends easily. Imbued with a zest for life, he lived each day to the fullest, enjoying the company of family and friends, and filling every hour with worthwhile effort, involvement or activity. In his retirement years, he derived special enjoyment from golfing. Survivors include three daughters: Heather M. Dawes and companion Arvil "Rusty" Hampton of Little Falls, Dorinda Gamberdella and husband Robert "Bert" of Pittsfield, Ma., and Niceta Mueller and husband William "Bill" of Dolgeville; grandchildren: Tabitha Dawes Vollmer of Alisio Viejo, Ca., Amanda Dawes of Little Falls, Joseph Gamberdella of Boston, Ma., and Jesse Gamberdella of Pittsfield, Ma.; great grandchildren: Colt Dawes Vollmer and Sedona Dawes Vollmer both of Alisio Viejo, Ca., and Anthony Gamberdella of Pittsfield, Ma., a sister: Dorothy Malone of Country Manor, Herkimer and a brother: Charles Miller of Scotia; nieces and nephews: Jack Bowman of Fla., Eileen and Willy Pijenburg of Cooperstown, Marcia and Wayne Griffith of Scotia, Terry and Angel Miller of Schenectady, Linda Miller of Little Falls, Bernard J. "B.J." and Debbie Miller of Palmyra and Faye and Paul Smalley of Cape Cod, Mass.; many great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters: Frank L. Miller, Eileen Miller, Mary (Sal) Bowman, Elizabeth Miller, Bernard E. Miller, James Miller and Robert Miller. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe St., Little Falls, on Friday, June 9, 2006 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Mr. Miller's funeral will commence at 10:30 am on Saturday, June 10, from the chapel of the funeral home where prayer will be offered and 11 :15 am from Holy Family Parish, corner of E. Main and John Streets, Little Falls, where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Memorial offerings may be made to Valley Health Services, the Meals on Wheels Program or to the Country Manor Nursing Home. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
