Obituary of William Ray

William M. "Bill" Ray, 78, a lifelong East Herkimer resident, entered into eternal rest unexpectedly on Saturday afternoon, February 25, 2006 at his home of natural causes. He was born on September 7, 1927 in Herkimer, the son of the late Kenneth C. and Ethel (Chrisman) Ray and was educated in Herkimer schools. Bill married his childhood sweetheart, Doris Wengert on September 11, 1948, in the First United Methodist Church in Herkimer with the Rev. Fred Cotnam, officiating. As a couple, Bill and Doris were extremely well-suited to one another: in particular, they shared a deep and steadfast devotion to one another and to family life, a dedication which served as a strong and secure foundation for their relationship. At the age of 17, Bill entered into military service enlisting with the United States Navy and was honorably discharged on Aug. 15, 1946. He earned the Victory, Asiatic Pacific and American Theatre Medals. For many years, Bill owned and operated "Patterson's Garage" in East Herkimer following his fathers retirement. He actively involved himself in the business keeping it family owned for many years and was proud to see his son carry on the responsibilities following his retirement. From 1953 until 1991, Bill was the water commissioner for the town of Herkimer. He was a past member of the East Herkimer Fire Department, Exempt Fireman's Association and a member of the East Herkimer Fish and Game Club. A loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather, he was an exemplary role model personifying a good work ethic, social conscience and personal compassion. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed bass fishing. One of his favorite pastimes was watching sports, especially the New York Yankees and also enjoyed bowling. He was an important and positive influence in the lives of his family and friends. He attended the First United Methodist Church, Herkimer-Little Falls. Survivors include his beloved wife of 57 years, Doris of East Herkimer; three close sons: William W. Ray and wife Elaine C. of Herkimer, Scott K. Ray of Herkimer and Michael R. Ray of South Carolina; a brother: Kenneth C.
